Peaceful protest: 1,000 people show the flag against the AfD!
Around 1,000 people came together in Bad Dürkheim on Saturday to demonstrate against an AfD election campaign event. The federal leader of the AfD, Alice Weidel, attended the event in the Salierhalle, where around 600 participants were present. Co-chair Tino Chrupalla was not among those present, although he was originally announced. The police reported that the demonstration was peaceful and was organized under the motto “Action Alliance for Diversity and Tolerance” and “The Palatinate remains colorful”.
Christoph Glogger, former mayor of Bad Dürkheim and co-organizer of the demonstration against the AfD, described the party as a danger to democracy. He emphasized the need for diversity and tolerance in society. In addition to Glogger, various parties, youth organizations and initiatives such as “Grandmas Against the Right” as well as churches were represented that raised their voices for a colorful and tolerant society. The “Market of Democracy” began at 11 a.m. on Wurstmarktplatz with stands from supporting organizations and also offered cultural contributions from local bands and speeches from union representatives.
Pressure on the city administration
The city of Bad Dürkheim is now facing criticism for approving the AfD event. A spokeswoman for the city pointed out that she was not the organizer and that approval was required in accordance with Article 21 of the Basic Law. The city administration made it clear that political parties are allowed to use public facilities as long as they are not unconstitutional.
The AfD event itself is the start of an election campaign for the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate, which is scheduled to take place in March. The party aims to exceed the 20 percent mark and is presenting a program that includes issues such as direct democracy, tougher migration policies and a return to nuclear energy. Weidel and Chrupalla were already present at an election campaign kick-off in Idar-Oberstein.
Taking a stand against the right
Numerous further demonstrations and rallies are planned in Rhineland-Palatinate and the surrounding area in the coming weeks to take a stand against the shift to the right. An overview of these mobilizations is available on the #ZusammenGegenRechts website. Citizens are invited to actively support democracy and tolerance and to take a stand against populist tendencies.
The demonstration in Bad Dürkheim is part of a larger social commitment that has increased significantly in recent months. Even though the AfD claims to have registered more than a thousand interested parties for its event in the Salierhalle, the mobilizations show that a broad civil society is actively supporting diversity and democracy.
The next events are already being planned to strengthen people's solidarity and belief in a colorful and democratic society. Further information on this can be found at n-tv, [SWR]. RLP](https://gruene-rlp.de/2024/02/16/einandergegenrechts-wir-stand-auf-gegen-die-afd-und-den-rechtsruck/) available.
