Carl Benz comprehensive school starts with SWR Medientrixx” for media competence!
In an increasingly digital world, media literacy is more important than ever. The Carl Benz comprehensive school in Wörth has recognized this and is taking part in the exciting “SWR Medientrixx” project. This project is supported by Südwestrundfunk (SWR), the State Ministry of Education, the Rhineland-Palatinate Media Authority and other partners and is intended to promote media education among students. As the Rhine Palatinate reports, the school is one of the ten selected educational institutions in Rhineland-Palatinate that are taking part in this important project.
As part of “SWR Medientrixx”, students are trained in several modules free of charge. These trainings aim to promote digital skills and critical thinking, which are essential for self-determination in everyday life and at school. Youngsters should not only learn to use the opportunities of the Internet, but also to recognize dangers such as fake news.
The program in practice
The training courses are an adventure for the young participants. Various activities and modules are offered that introduce students to the world of digital media. As part of the “The Great Library Pirates” event, part of the project, 3rd and 4th grade students are playfully introduced to the library in a library rally. Here you can solve tasks in groups of 2 to 5 children and learn more about pirates, like from SWR described.
When visiting the library, the focus is on getting to know research options. The children engage in various tasks, learn sailor's knots and at the end even enjoy a treasure hunt in which they are awarded “Master Class Library Pirates”.
What are the goals?
Promoting media and social skills is at the top of the agenda. The project not only aims to introduce children to basic digital tools and applications, but also encourages them to develop solutions independently and share their results. This supports learning in the digital world as well as the children's personal development. This also corresponds to the goals stated on the website Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth are formulated. Media competence is seen as the key to the self-determination and personal responsibility of young people.
At a time when the Internet plays such a central role in the lives of our children, projects like “SWR Medientrixx” come at just the right time. At the Carl Benz Comprehensive School, students now have the opportunity to learn how to use digital media in a safe environment and find out how they can use these skills profitably. Those in charge here certainly have a good hand!
