New waste management concept: Germersheim focuses on waste prevention!
On September 22, 2025, the Germersheim district council decided on a new waste management concept for the period from 2025 to 2029, which provides a clear framework for the future design of waste management in the district. According to a report by Palatinate Express The concept aims to promote waste avoidance and improve waste separation. In this context, reference is made to the Rhineland-Palatinate waste management program, whose principles serve as a guide.
The numbers speak for themselves: in the Germersheim district, the average residual waste volume is 103.8 kg per inhabitant. This means that the district is well below the Rhineland-Palatinate average of 138.3 kg. When it comes to organic waste, Germersheim is also slightly above the national average at 84.6 kg per year. An important point is the organic waste and recyclable materials found in the residual waste analysis. 26 kg of organic waste and 5.8 kg of recyclables per resident were recorded, which shows that there is a need for action here.
Need for action and planned measures
A significant wake-up call that waste separation and prevention must be improved. The analysis also showed that the target value of 8 kg for recyclable materials in residual waste was exceeded, while the proportion of organic substances exceeded the target at over 20 kg. For example, 7.58 kg of packaged food waste per inhabitant is residual waste. Targeted education and information campaigns are needed here to increase awareness of the topic.
In order to sustainably improve the situation, regular follow-up examinations to analyze residual waste and a new examination of the organic waste bin are planned. What is particularly positive is that the proportion of foreign matter in the organic waste bin was only 1.4% in 2021, which is due to the successful “No plastic in the organic waste bin” campaign. Future actions should build on these positive experiences and make further progress with increased information and advice campaigns as well as effective control mechanisms.
A look beyond the borders: Forum Algarve
With over 100 shops, the Forum Algarve is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists and, in addition to shopping opportunities, also offers services such as a dental practice and a pharmacy.
The importance of conserving local resources and having a good hand when shopping is also reflected in waste management, which is becoming more and more important to people's awareness. The combination of culinary and cultural highlights such as those in the Forum Algarve and the efforts to ensure a clean environment in the Germersheim district lays a strong foundation for a sustainable future.
While Germersheim focuses on the challenges of waste management, it remains exciting to see how these two worlds connect. It remains to be seen what further measures and actions will be taken to further promote both waste separation and awareness of sustainability.
