In this year's city cycling campaign in the Kaiserslautern district, the cyclists achieved a remarkable result. The district administration described the participants’ performance as an “outstanding collective achievement”. In the period from June 5th to 25th, 36 teams cycled and achieved impressive numbers: They covered a total of 83,006 kilometers and saved around 14 tons of CO2. This is equivalent to more than two trips around the earth! The motivating motto of the campaign: “get on the bike”.

A total of 4,620 trips were made, which is no less than a record compared to 2024. At that time there were only 2,639 trips and 49,209 kilometers. The increasing number of cyclists shows that more and more citizens are discovering the benefits of cycling.

The best individual drivers and teams will be honored on September 14th at a ceremony as part of the city festival in Landstuhl. The celebratory award ceremony will take place at 3:45 p.m. on the stage at the Alter Markt. A great way to celebrate the successes of participants and inspire others to get on the bike too.

The competition, known internationally as CITY CYCLING, is intended to encourage people to experience the benefits of cycling in everyday life and thus playfully motivate them to switch to cycling. According to that Federal Environment Agency The campaign not only takes your own health into account, but also benefits the environment: less car traffic reduces air pollution and exhaust fumes.

The health benefits of cycling

As the World Health Organization emphasizes, cycling and walking help combat obesity and lack of exercise. In the European Region, these factors are responsible for one million deaths each year. Exercise can not only improve your fitness, but also reduce air pollution, which kills more than half a million people every year.

In the long run, taking action is beneficial for everyone. Just 30 minutes of cycling or 20 minutes of walking per week can reduce the risk of death by at least 10%. Additionally, studies show that bike commuters have a 30% lower mortality rate from cancer, highlighting the importance of active transportation.

With the right infrastructure, many more people could be inspired to cycle. Municipalities are urgently called upon to plan and promote safe cycling and walking paths. The CITY CYCLING campaign shows that the will is there; Now it is important to support and anchor this movement in the long term.
