The exhibition runs fromJune 27th to November 2nd, 2025and is daily from11 a.m. to 7 p.mopen until Thursdays9 p.m. Entry is 12 euros. Not only large paintings can be seen, but also works on paper, photographs and sculptures. This diversity makes abstract art accessible to a wide audience, with stories and anecdotes enriching the experience of the works. Personal childhood memories and political experiences are reflected in the works of art on display. The emotional density is often enriched by poetic and philosophical reflections presented on the walls, while sound samples between the images provide special atmospheric accents.

The artistic development and influences

Sean Scully, born in Dublin in 1945 and now living in New York, has turned his entire life into a creative expression. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich between 2002 and 2007 and thus contributes to the training and further education of young artists. The exhibition shows his artistic development from his first figurative works in the 1960s to his monumental, abstract masterpieces. Particularly noteworthy are the early works, which are being presented publicly for the first time and already show the influence of form, rhythm and composition.

In the 1970s, Scully found his characteristic design language, which is characterized by large color fields and clear lines. His most famous works are characterized by the thick application of paint and coarse brushstrokes and often use checkerboard-like patterns. These works of art are not only technical masterpieces, but also emotional testaments that reflect Scully's intense engagement with the world around him.

Interventions in public spaces

The exhibition is enriched by three publicly accessible sculptures installed in and around the Bucerius Kunst Forum. Below is the outdoor installationAir Cage 2, which is part of a pilot project in Hamburg and was funded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction. These sculptures fit harmoniously into the exhibition and expand the dialogue between art and viewers.

Scully describes his art as an attempt to create unifying elements and reduce differences. This goal runs through his entire work and gives the retrospective a special depth. How Bucerius Art Forum reports, the exhibition offers an emotional journey through the epochs of his life, in which change and continuity emerge as two poles of his artistic search for expression and truth.

This retrospective is not only a celebration of Scully, but also an invitation for everyone to experience the diverse facets and emotions of his art. The combination of images and text opens up new perspectives and allows visitors to engage with Scully's world in a very personal way. Don't miss the opportunity to be part of this artistic event!
