Redesign of the pedestrian zone: Karthause will be greener and more inviting!
There is reason to be happy in Koblenz: the pedestrian zone at the Karthause shopping center was recently redesigned and now surprises visitors with generous plantings and comfortable seating. The project, which is seen as a model project for future developments, was ceremoniously handed over to the public. Head of the building department Andreas Lukas explained that the measure represents a step forward not only in terms of design but also financially. The Aldi company in particular contributed financially to the redesign, which gives the measure additional weight. Rhein-Zeitung reports that the new pedestrian zone is not only more beautiful, but also functional to improve the stay in this central location.
One thing is clear: the decision to redesign will be received positively by many quarters. The FREIEN WÄHLER city councilors, Edgar Kühlenthal and Stephan Wefelscheid, clearly spoke out in favor of the plans in their public statements. They emphasize that the new design proposals will help to significantly increase the quality of stay in the shopping center. FREIE VÖHLER have suggested various measures that will be presented at a meeting of the Urban Development Committee on May 12th.
Planned measures for a better quality of stay
A central point of the new design is the elimination of two wide raised beds that previously acted as a barrier. Instead, new meeting and communication areas should be created. Large mobile pots for fresh greenery are also planned, as well as the renewal of the seating options, which were previously rather uncomfortable. Modern seating is planned to replace worn-out benches, while the outdated lighting needs a refresh. In addition, the old paving will be replaced with uniform, modern concrete paving.
These construction measures are also part of a larger project that is linked to insulation work on the adjacent private underground car park. The costs will be shared between the city and the owners, with the FREIEN VÖHLER also planning to apply for funds to redevelop the surrounding areas in the upcoming budget consultations. The adjacent urban areas, such as the Dreifaltigkeitshaus in the south and the Karthäuser JuBüz in the north, have not yet been planned, which leaves room for future developments.
The project at the Karthause shopping center is not only a step towards making the cityscape more attractive, but also shows how important public space is for the quality of life in a city. r-ein.de points out that such measures can serve as a motor for urban development and thus make a contribution to sustainability.
