Traditional chain Listmann is closing almost all branches after 136 years
The traditional chain Listmann, known for its extensive range of craft and artist supplies, is facing a bitter turning point. How Mercury reports, the company is closing almost all of its stores at the end of the year, a move that is emotional for many customers and employees. Managing director Oliver Listmann, who is now in the fourth generation to run the company, is forced to make this drastic decision.
The closures affect around 115 employees for whom a social plan has been drawn up. Branches in cities such as Mainz, Wiesbaden, Koblenz and Aachen are affected, while the last remaining branch in Aachen will be operated by a new owner from 2026. The reasons for the closure are complex: There is a lack of a successor because Listmann's sons have chosen other career paths. Attempts to sell the company, which has existed for 136 years, failed due to the extensive range of around 85,000 items.
The challenges of the market
In addition to the succession problem, Listmann is confronted with rising costs and changing consumer shopping habits. These developments make it difficult to run the company profitably. The managing director already thanked the loyal customers on Instagram and announced discounts on the entire range until the closure. “There are a lot of tears,” says Oliver Listmann, pointing to the difficult situation of the long-time employees.
Succession planning is of central importance for companies like Listmann, as family and company often go hand in hand. How Haufe explains, entrepreneurs should consider various options such as a transfer within the family, a management buyout or the liquidation of the company. A well-thought-out succession plan is crucial to counteract legal and tax difficulties.
The artistic stage in the distance
While the end of a time is being heralded in Cologne, a different development is emerging on the artistic side. NBC aired a special musical edition called “Wicked: One Wonderful Night” on November 6, 2023, and packed with surprises, the event will now be available on Peacock. As in the closure of Listmann, the theme of friendship and tragic turning points play a role there. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo deliver moving performances that captivate viewers.
But the challenges in the market, be it in retail or in the entertainment industry, make it clear that on the one hand requirements are changing and on the other hand the connection with fans or customers is crucial. Whether it's the art or the craft, one thing remains certain: connecting stories through experiences will always matter.
