In Hauenstein, citizens are worried about the future of the “Landhotel Neding”, which is currently for sale. The complex has around 50 rooms and was originally built as the “Landhotel Wasgau” in 1974. After a temporary vacancy, the hotel was reopened under a new name in 2023 and successively renovated. The announcement of the sale via “eBay Classifieds” surprised both the council members and the municipal administration and is causing unrest in the community. The possible loss of accommodation capacity is an issue that concerns everyone, as there is currently no corresponding development plan that could regulate the use of the property Palatinate Express reported.
But what does this actually mean for the community? There is currently only a land use plan for Speyerstrasse, and the uncertainty about the need for a development plan remains. There have already been discussions in the local council about the creation of such a plan, with the parliamentary group leaders of the SPD and CDU, Andreas Wilde and Michael Zimmermann, speaking out against repealing a corresponding resolution. They emphasize that it is in the community's interest to retain control over the use of the building. In contrast, the Hääschde voter group argued that the owner of the hotel acted carefully to support the community, reports Rhine Palatinate.
The challenges of accommodation
The challenges associated with selling the country hotel are part of a larger trend in the region. Accommodation competition reported in Freiburg has increased in recent years. Supply and demand have increased sharply here since 2016, but this has also led to conflicts over commercial building space. The situation in Hauenstein could develop similarly if the hotel is sold without a clear development plan. Freiburger Wirtschaft und Touristik GmbH is already working intensively on an accommodation concept that is aimed at long-term, city-friendly further development. This approach could serve as an example for Hauenstein on how to position itself to avoid unwanted uses, reports City of Freiburg.
The next steps in Hauenstein are clear: The SPD and CDU plan to raise the issue again in the local council. In order to make citizens' voices heard, a rally by the parliamentary groups represented in the Council will be organized for March 3, 2024 at 4 p.m. The developments surrounding the Landhotel Neding will continue to be closely monitored, because not only the future of the hotel is at stake, but also the entire accommodation capacity of the region.
