Drug scandal at Berliner Platz: Kiosk closed after raid!

The “Café LU 1” kiosk on Berliner Platz in Ludwigshafen was closed by the police after a large-scale drug raid. The kiosk is suspected of acting as a hub for drug deals. The investigators particularly targeted two men aged 29 and 31 who had already been arrested. Another suspect, a 25-year-old, was also temporarily arrested, but was released after a search of his apartment. The Frankenthal public prosecutor's office has already applied for arrest warrants against the two main suspects. These arrests took place on Tuesday in the city center, where the kiosk was also closely examined.

As part of this raid, police forces searched several apartments in the area, both in Ludwigshafen and in the Rhein-Pfalz district. Considerable amounts of drugs were seized: 3.5 kilograms of marijuana and 80 grams of cocaine. The police also found 60,000 euros in cash, which suggests that a lucrative business transaction was taking place here, as Rheinpfalz reports.

The dimension of drug crime

This raid joins a worrying trend. As Mannheim24 reports, there were only recently extensive arrests in the cities of Mannheim and Lampertheim, in which a large network of drug traffickers was exposed. Several men between the ages of 32 and 57 were arrested and a total of 17 kilograms of cannabis and 11 kilograms of amphetamine were seized. These statistics make it clear that drug trafficking is a serious problem that not only has a local impact, but is also felt throughout the region.

The figures on drug crime in Germany are alarming. Around 347,000 cases were recorded in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. Of these, around 208,000 cases involve cannabis, which has been partially legal since April 1, 2024. However, the majority of drug crimes remain high, which shows that despite the legal changes, a lack of control and high demand still exist. The report from Statista shows that around 55,500 crimes were registered in the area of drug trafficking alone.

In this damaged structure, not only society suffers, but also the health of consumers. The number of drug-related deaths has reached a worrying high in recent years. The problems are diverse - from the long-term health damage caused by drug abuse to the social consequences in the affected communities. The commitment of the police and the public prosecutor's office is therefore crucial to break the vicious circle of drug trafficking and consumption.
