Confused senior almost causes accident on B9 – police are looking for witnesses!

At dusk on September 20, 2025, a worrying incident occurred on the B9 towards Mainz, more precisely in the Landskrongalerie roundabout. As news.de reports, several witnesses became aware of the unusual driving behavior of a silver VW Passat. The 86-year-old driver appeared to be in a confused state and drove into the roundabout without braking, even though two vehicles had the right of way there. Thanks to fortunate circumstances and the quick reaction of the other drivers, a serious accident was just avoided.

After the incident, the driver, who was possibly under the influence of medication, was taken to the Oppenheim police station. There the police took a blood sample and confiscated his driver's license. The vehicle keys were also taken into custody. Criminal proceedings for endangering road traffic were initiated and the driving license office was informed of the events. The driver was then picked up by family members, which shows that the matter was not without consequences for his loved ones.

Driving license revocation and its consequences

Such an incident can have far-reaching consequences for the driver involved. According to information from bussgeldkatalog.org, the driving license revocation is not temporary, but can be permanent, especially if the driver's fitness to drive is questioned. The most common reasons for withdrawal include careless driving and accidents caused by the driver themselves.

A driving license is revoked by an administrative act by the responsible authority and can have severely restrictive consequences for the driver's mobility. Additional fines and, if necessary, a medical-psychological examination (MPU) are often required to restore the ability to drive a vehicle. The legal basis for a driving license revocation includes, among others, the Road Traffic Act (StVG) and the Criminal Code (StGB), as explained on fachanwalt.de.

The minimum period of deprivation may vary depending on the circumstances of the offense. In the best case, those affected will be allowed to apply for a new driving license after the blocking period has expired, whereby they must prove their suitability.

In their appeal to the public, the police in Oppenheim expressly asked that other witnesses, in particular the two drivers with right of way and possible occupants of the roundabout, come forward. The events of that night not only cast a shadow over the driver, but also call on the community to be vigilant and keep a good hand on the road.
