Bundesliga start: Cologne celebrates, HSV keeps Gladbach in check!
At the start of the 2025/2026 Bundesliga season, fans saw interesting encounters with mixed feelings. Today, August 24, 2025, 1. FC Köln celebrated a triumphant win against 1. FSV Mainz 05, while Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburger SV were stuck in a goalless draw.
In the exciting match between Mainz and Cologne, the only goal of the game only came in the 90th minute. Marius Bülter gave Cologne a 1-0 win with a precisely placed header from a cross from Luca Waldschmidt. Another pivotal point of the game was the red card for Paul Nebel from Mainz, which he received for an emergency stop on Jakub Kamiński (60th minute). This was particularly bitter since Mainz had previously shone with 13 home games in a row and 309 days without defeat. The number of spectators was also impressive: 33,305 fans celebrated in the stadium as Cologne celebrated promotion as second division champions. For Cologne's new signing Ragnar Ache, however, the joy was dampened as he had to leave the field in stoppage time with a knee injury, which could be worrying for the upcoming matches.
Hamburger SV: A solid start again
Hamburger SV's game against Borussia Mönchengladbach ended in a sobering 0-0. After seven long years in the second division, this was HSV's first meeting with the Bundesliga, and although they were strong defensively, they lacked the offensive power to threaten Gladbach. Goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes made several important saves and said that the team was ready to compete in this league. The Hamburg team will make their next appearance next Friday when they take on FC St. Pauli in the city derby.
The Gladbachers were also led by their newly appointed captain Rocco Reitz, who was dissatisfied with the result. Borussia had more of the game, but couldn't create any significant opportunities to win. A remarkable scene occurred when William Mikelbrencis scored a late goal, but it was disallowed due to an offside decision. Gladbach received significant reinforcements with the signing of Gio Reyna, who, however, was not in the squad.
A look at the league
On the first day of the match, other teams in the league also put in an impressive performance. FC Bayern Munich left no stone unturned and defeated Rasenballsport Leipzig 6-0, while Eintracht Frankfurt clearly defeated Werder Bremen 4-1. FC St. Pauli and Borussia Dortmund also offered the spectators an exciting draw (3:3).
| Game | Result | Halftime |
|---|---|---|
| FC Bayern Munich – Rasenballsport Leipzig | 6-0 | 3-0 |
| Eintracht Frankfurt – Werder Bremen | 4:1 | 2:0 |
| FC St. Pauli – Borussia Dortmund | 3:3 | 0:1 |
Overall, the Bundesliga is looking very exciting at the start of the season. The teams will fight hard for points in the coming weeks, and the next round in particular, in which city rivals Hamburg and St. Pauli as well as Gladbach and Cologne meet, promises heated duels.
