Federweißer harvest 2025: Healthy vineyards promise a magnificent harvest!
What are the chances for the 2025 vintage? A look at the current estimates from the German Wine Institute (DWI) reveals: they are “magnificent”. The vineyards in Germany's 13 wine-growing regions are healthy and well developed, which is a positive sign for all wine lovers and winemakers. DWI spokesman Ernst Büscher does his best to shed light on the winegrowers' situation. The first Federweißen are expected to be harvested around August 19th, similar to last year, and the general start of harvest for early ripening grape varieties will be in the first week of September.
Federweißer, the refreshing grape must made from white grape varieties with incomplete fermentation, is known for its lower alcohol content and slightly sparkling note. It offers wine lovers a nice opportunity to experience the taste of the new harvest during this time. So far, however, there has been little weather-related damage to the vines, apart from isolated hail storms. Record temperatures at the beginning of July rarely caused sunburn on the grapes, which further increases anticipation for the coming weeks.
Challenges and opportunities
However, there are more worrying issues. In many regions there are reports of missing or unevenly distributed rainfall, which particularly stresses young vineyards with less deep roots. Here the weather during the harvest could be decisive for the quality of the harvest. Winegrowers in Germany are hoping for a golden autumn that will give the grapes the finishing touches.
Germany is rich in wine traditions and produces a wide variety of wines and winemakers in its 13 wine-growing regions. The German Viticulture Future Initiative encourages the population to visit these areas and discover the local wineries. If you want to try out different types of German wine when buying wine in supermarkets, you will find numerous delicacies here. A little tip on the side: you should avoid wines under €2.99, no matter where they come from!
The anticipation of the grape harvest is already spreading throughout the region. It remains exciting to see whether the hopes will be reflected in a high-quality harvest that will delight not only the winemakers, but also all wine lovers in Cologne and beyond. So you can look forward to the last days of August!
