In the Mendig community, a lot is happening in terms of digitization. Since summer 2023, Tobias Querbach has been a Chief Digital Officer (CDO) for the district and has set itself the task of implementing innovative solutions as part of the "Smart Cities" project. During a first visit to Mayor Jörg Lempertz and the representative of the VG administration, Jürgen Zinken, he presented the current projects to raise the region to the next digital level. The projects include the “Amt-O-Mat”, which enables the ID card outside the usual opening times of the citizens' office. This is intended to increase the accessibility of administrative services. The focus is also on the regioohub in Rieden, where the old rectory is to be converted into a meeting and workplace for the local community administration. In addition, the installation of digital road lighting controls and a failure-proof Lorawan system is part of the project.
Financing and long -term goals
An important aspect of the project is the financing, which is equipped with a total of 17.5 million euros by the end of 2027. This is intended to make the regional structures more efficient, technologically more advanced and socially inclusive. A central concern is the networking of people, the environment and systems in order to promote sustainable development. Here, citizens can be actively involved, which underlines the positive effect of the digital transformation on social interaction.
The “Smart Region Myk10” project supports the creation of regiohubs in the Mayen-Koblenz region, which represent multifunctional work, encounter and innovation spaces. The aim is to promote the exchange of knowledge and to advance digitization. In these regiohubs, co-working spaces are also offered to help people exchange innovative ideas on site and to develop new business models. There is also great value on local interaction. Challenges and opportunities
Where there is light is often also shadow. Municipalities face diverse challenges; Standardized solutions are often not sufficient.
