Mendig gets smart: Digitalization starts with 17.5 million euros!

A lot is happening in the Mendig community when it comes to digitalization. Tobias Querbach has been working as Chief Digital Officer (CDO) for the district since summer 2023 and has set himself the task of implementing innovative solutions as part of the “Smart Cities” project. During a first inaugural visit to Mayor Jörg Lempertz and the representative of the VG administration, Jürgen Zinken, he presented the current projects that are intended to take the region to the next digital level. View current reports that the aim of the initiative is to test digital and innovative solutions for citizens.

The projects include the “Amt-O-Mat”, which makes it possible to pick up your ID card outside the usual opening hours of the citizens' office. This is intended to increase the accessibility of administrative services. The focus is also on the RegioHub in Rieden, where the old rectory is to be converted into a meeting and workplace for the local community administration. In addition, the installation of digital street lighting controls and a fail-safe LoRaWan system is part of the project.

Funding and long-term goals

An important aspect of the project is the financing, which is worth a total of 17.5 million euros until the end of 2027. The aim is to make regional structures more efficient, technologically advanced and socially inclusive. A central concern is the networking of people, the environment and systems in order to promote sustainable development. Citizens can be actively involved, which underlines the positive effect of digital transformation on social interaction.

The “Smart Region MYK10” project supports the creation of RegioHubs in the Mayen-Koblenz region, which represent multifunctional work, meeting and innovation spaces. The aim is to promote the exchange of knowledge and advance digitalization. These RegioHubs also offer co-working spaces that are intended to help local people exchange innovative ideas and develop new business models. Great importance is also placed on local interaction. WFG MYK provides further insights into the planning considerations.

Challenges and opportunities

Where there is light, there is often also shadow. Municipalities face a variety of challenges; standardized solutions are often not sufficient. A user-centered approach is needed to develop tailor-made solutions. How Fraunhofer IESE explains, participation-oriented processes such as co-creation or co-design are crucial for the success of the projects. Prototypes are developed in an agile process so that the needs of stakeholders can always be taken into account.

In the municipality of Mendig, it is now important to push forward the digitalization projects and actively involve citizens in the further development. In order for the region to fully exploit the potential of digitalization, cooperation between administration, business and society is required. The path to a smart community is the goal, and Mendig has taken a first step in this direction.
