Candles light up around the world: remembering deceased children on December 14th

In a few weeks, on December 14, 2025, Remembrance Day for deceased children will be celebrated worldwide. On this day, families, friends and relatives remember their beloved little lights who were taken from life far too soon. This special initiative, “Worldwide Candle Lighting”, has been established since 1996 and attracts many people every year who place burning candles in the windows at 7 p.m. This creates a 24-hour wave of light around the globe, symbolizing the cohesion and solidarity among those affected. How VIEW currently reports, the “Star Children” will also be honored in a special light this year.

As part of this campaign, stars with the names of the children appear in all issues of “BLICK aktuell” in the calendar week 50 before Remembrance Day. Those affected are invited to send in the data of the deceased children using the keyword “Star Children”. It is important to ensure that the place of residence and the specific edition of “BLICK aktuell” must be stated. The deadline for data submission is November 28, 2025, and interested parents can email their information to sternenkinder@kruppverlag.de or send it by post to the Krupp media center “Star Children”, Kranzweiherweg 31, 53489 Sinzig.

A light of hope

The “Worldwide Candle Lighting” is more than just a symbolic act; it is a connection across geographical boundaries. Each light that is lit represents a deceased child and is a reminder that these children brightened the lives of their loved ones and will never be forgotten. Many self-help groups support Remembrance Day and make it easier for families to exchange ideas and share their grief. In Germany, this initiative is supported by, among others, the Federal Association of Orphaned Parents. V., which brings together a variety of self-help groups for grieving parents. These communities not only organize individual mourning events, but also promote solidarity among those affected and offer space for shared memories.

Remembrance Day itself always takes place on the second Sunday in December and invites people from all over the world to take part in this special moment of remembrance. At 7 p.m. a light will be lit in each time zone, which will then continue to shine across the different time zones until tomorrow. The idea behind it is simple: “When light goes out, life becomes dark, but with light, grief will not permanently darken the lives of relatives,” is how it is anchored in the initiative launched a few years ago.

As in previous years, BLICK currently will not only create a memorial space with this campaign, but also increase awareness of the fate of the affected families. The accompanying texts on the topic of memory and grief are also made available on various platforms on the Internet in order to promote the desired support and understanding.
