Marc Weigel re-elected mayor of Neustadt with 80%!
On Sunday, June 15, 2025, Marc Weigel from the Free Voters' Community (FWG) was re-elected mayor of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse with a respectable 79.7 percent of the vote. His only challenger, the independent Steffi Karbach, received 20.3 percent of the vote, which secured Weigel's election victory in a contest that was both exciting and unsurprising. The voter turnout was only 37 percent, which means that around 42,000 eligible voters were called to the polls and thus showed a visible interest in local politics, although this number is rather inconspicuous compared to other elections, as [Statista](https://de.statista.com/themen/175/wahl participation/) shows.
Marc Weigel, who has been mayor of Neustadt since 2018 and was born in the city in 1979, has already digitized and restructured the administration during his term of office so far. Important projects such as improving disaster control and renovating the station forecourt have made progress under his leadership. After the election, Weigel thanked the citizens for their trust and expressed his determination to resolve the infrastructure renovation backlog. “We have to create more modern schools and better roads,” he explained in an initial statement, as reported by SWR.
Looking into the future
The challenges for Weigel are clearly defined: In his new term in office, he will, among other things, prepare the 2027 State Garden Show in Neustadt, which is expected to bring tens of thousands of tourists to the city. He also plans to reform fire and disaster protection and will make protecting the population one of his priorities.
Although voter turnout was rather low, the outcome of the election came as little surprise to many political analysts. Karbach did not put up any election posters for financial reasons, while Weigel campaigned for votes with around 150 posters. A congratulatory message from city council members and the city administration issued on the Sunday after the election shows that Weigel is firmly in the saddle and continues to expect strong support as he officially takes up his new mandate on January 1, 2026.
The official final result of the election will be announced in the council chamber on June 16, 2025 at 4 p.m. This will show whether Neustadt residents who are eligible to vote will discover any further surprises in voter turnout or vote distribution.
