The Krasemann parking lot in Neustadt an der Friedrichstrasse will in future be equipped with new technology that will record parking fees more transparently. This change is in response to several discussions in the city council about appropriate payment methods and efficient parking controls.
The old access via barrier had been broken for a long time and was dismantled, which not only caused trouble for the city but also financial losses. Now drivers are supposed to enter their license plate number at the machine when they leave the parking lot and pay the parking fees, which vary depending on their stay.
Discussion about disabled parking spaces
A central point of the discussion concerns the rights of drivers with a severely disabled permit. Green city councilor Friderike Graebert asked during a city council meeting whether the new system would also be able to recognize these ID cards. To address this problem, the city is planning to designate two parking spaces on Friedrichstrasse as disabled parking spaces. However, Graebert complained that this regulation was cumbersome for visitors and tourists and that fundamental rights should not be impaired.
