Taser use in Obrigheim: Aggressive man offers resistance to the police!

On October 11, 2025, the police in Obrigheim, in the Bad Dürkheim district, were alerted because of loud arguments on Albsheimer Hauptstrasse. As reported by wochenblatt-reporter.de, it was a 44-year-old man who was in a highly aggressive state and apparently drunk. The man strongly resisted the officers' attempts to restrain him, which further escalated the situation.

The emergency services were forced to use a Taser to bring the aggressor under control. After this operation, which took place at 10:24 a.m., a blood sample was taken and the man was taken into police custody. Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident. Criminal proceedings were initiated against him for resisting law enforcement officers, as also n-tv.de describes.

A look at Taser deployments in Germany

The current situation surrounding Taser deployments is not without explosiveness. According to an analysis, numbers have been increasing in recent years. Between 2021 and 2023, the number of Taser deployments more than doubled. There were a total of 1,171 operations, with those affected in 662 cases in 2022 being unarmed, as documented on indymedia.org. Tasers generate a current pulse of up to 50,000 volts by firing two electrodes, making them a controversial tool in everyday police work.

It should be noted that Tasers are often incorrectly viewed as completely risk-free. While they are classified as a “non-lethal weapon,” they can pose serious risks, particularly to the elderly or those with health problems. In 2023, 229 people required outpatient treatment after being used with a Taser, and some were hospitalized. It is also notable that a fifth of Taser victims required psychiatric hospitalization due to mental illness.

Recently, the discussion about the use of Tasers has become more intense, especially since tragic incidents such as that of a 67-year-old man in Wuppertal resulted in serious injuries. Such events raise questions about operational practice and the safety of using Tasers.
