Neuwied is cycling on a record course: 115,651 kilometers and 19 tons of CO2 saved!

Neuwied once again caused a stir during the Climate Alliance's city cycling event. With 515 active cyclists from the city and district, an incredible 115,651 kilometers were covered during the campaign period. This represents an increase of over 25,000 kilometers compared to the previous year and is clear evidence that cycling is very popular in the region. News Koblenz reports that participants saved an impressive 19 tons of CO2 during the competition.

The individual ranking was dominated by Patrick Simmer, who managed to cycle an impressive 2,555 kilometers. Former challengers who didn't want to be beaten found themselves in the “Ecumenical Travel” group, which won the title of largest group with 40 members. In the category for the highest average number of kilometers driven per team member, the “I do” faction impressed with 1,453 kilometers.

School cycling as part of the movement

Particularly exciting is the school cycling, which takes place parallel to CITY CYCLING and in which eight federal states are taking part this year. The aim here is to award prizes to the “most cycling-active schools” and thus get children and young people excited about cycling. The competition offers incentives for students, parents and teachers to become active and make the benefits of cycling visible in their everyday lives. City cycling supports this initiative to promote the mobility of young people.

The Marienschule came out on top in the school rankings and received a new bike rack. The State School for the Blind and the Rhein-Wied-Gymnasium also shone with their achievements. This shows that cycling is becoming increasingly popular as a healthy and sustainable means of transport in the school environment.

The benefits of cycling

The aim of the city cycling competition itself is to motivate more people to use the bike as a means of transport in everyday life. The initiative, which has existed since 2008 and now brings together almost 300,000 people from almost 900 municipalities, wants to draw attention to the benefits of cycling. The Federal Environment Agency highlights that cycling not only offers fresh air and exercise, but also helps to relieve traffic.

In order to promote this change, comprehensive cycling infrastructure is essential. Local politicians are therefore invited to take part in the city cycling event in order to get their own idea of the cycling conditions in their community. Citizens can also use the RADar! Submit suggestions for improvements that could further advance progress.

The deputy Ralf Seemann praised the high number of participants and the outstanding achievements of the cyclists and thanked the organizers for their tireless efforts. The prizes that awaited the best individual riders and groups included, for example, 10 free tickets to Neuwied Zoo and 14 vouchers for a bicycle shop - a great motivation for all cyclists!
