Neuwied cycles records: 19 tons of CO2 saved while cycling in the city!

Neuwied has once again exceeded its records in city cycling this year. For the fifth time, the city is taking part in this nationwide Climate Alliance initiative, which aims to reduce car journeys and instead promote bicycles as an environmentally friendly means of transport. Loud View current 515 active cyclists got on the saddle in Neuwied this year, which is twice as many as in the first year of 2021.

Impressive figures testify to the success of the campaign: a total of 115,651 kilometers were covered by bike, which represents an increase of more than 25,000 kilometers compared to the previous year. This mobility transition has not only made cycling more popular, but has also resulted in 19 tons of CO2 being saved. This shows how awareness of climate-friendly alternatives is growing in the region.

Winners and awards

Patrick Simmer achieved first place in the individual ranking with 2,555 kilometers. The largest group was “Ecumenical on the Road” with an impressive 40 cyclists. What is particularly noteworthy is the high average number of kilometers driven per team member: the “I do” faction achieved 1,453 kilometers, which speaks for the team’s performance. The schools also put in a lot of effort: the Marienschule took overall victory, followed by the State School for the Blind and the Rhein-Wied-Gymnasium.

For their achievements, the best individual riders and groups were awarded 10 free tickets from the Neuwied Zoo support association and 14 vouchers from a bicycle shop. The Marienschule will also receive a new bicycle rack as a further incentive for environmentally friendly behavior.

Thanks to the organizers and the city

Ralf Seemann, city councilor, paid great respect to the participants and expressed his thanks to the organizers. This initiative not only promotes the health of the participants, but also increases awareness of climate protection in our society.

The “City Cycling” campaign usually lasts 21 days and encourages people to make everyday journeys more climate-friendly through cycling. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) also plans to take part in the initiative in the coming years to further raise awareness of sustainable mobility. The positive effects are also pointed out: an estimated 10.4 tons of CO2 can be avoided through similar actions, which is particularly important in the context of the transport sector, which, according to the Federal Environment Agency, contributes significantly to air pollution.

At a time when climate protection is more urgent than ever, Neuwied shows that a lot can be achieved with a joint effort - and not only for your own benefit, but also for the benefit of our environment.
