A look at the current crime situation
The hookah bar incident is part of a larger problem. According to the police crime statistics 2024, which are available on the website of the BKA was published, violent crime in Germany rose by 1.5% last year. This is the highest level since 2007 and shows that such acts of violence, even in connection with shisha bars, should not be an isolated incident.

In contrast, violent and sexual crime rates have increased, which is a cause for concern. Similar incidents in other cities
Cologne is not the only city that has to deal with such incidents. In Hamburg, for example, there was an attack on the “Blue Lagoon” shisha bar in November 2023. Several men, including young perpetrators, massively attacked guests with a machete and firearms, injuring three people, including a man who was shot in the stomach. These acts cause great unease and question the safety of such facilities. The perpetrators in this case had expected high stakes and in the end only stole 40 euros.
Overall, all of these events show that public safety in hookah bars and similar establishments must be taken seriously. The authorities have a duty to take measures to ensure the safety of all visitors and to counter such acts of violence. How the situation will develop in the coming months remains to be seen.
