Climate workshops for primary school students in Diez: Experience sustainability in a playful way!

A new autumn magic unfolds in Diez, just in time for the start of the traditionally celebrated St. Martin's markets. The connection to nature and a modern awareness of climate and energy are very important. Today, November 11, 2025, the opening event of a series of workshops dedicated to precisely these topics will take place at the Esterauschule in Holzappel and the Pestalozzischule in Diez. The third graders of the primary schools in the Diez municipality can look forward to an exciting program led by Dr. Yvonne Thielmann from Wissenswind.de is designed and implemented.

Climate protection manager Richard Koch brought this initiative to life with a lot of commitment. The aim of the workshops is to introduce children to the importance of renewable energies. A highlight of the event is the LEGO island, which simulates the melting of ice and sea level rise in a transparent box. The children learn in a playful way how energy is generated and saved.

Experiments and enlightenment

The students actively participate in age-appropriate experiments in order to experience scientific connections for themselves. In addition to building small wind turbines that are powered by wind and solar cells, an experiment with a Peltier element is also on the agenda. Here the children learn to convert temperature differences into energy. Another exciting experiment involves a thermal imaging camera to make temperature differences visible on your own body. Richard Koch uses his insulated clothing as a practical example to explain the principles of energy-efficient renovations. The four primary schools – Esterauschule, Pestalozzischule, Birlenbach primary school and the Karl-von-Ibell-Schule – ensure broad participation, which benefits the entire community.

But it's not just about exciting projects in Diez. If you want to take a look outside the box, you will find an impressive development of tallest buildings in the world of architecture. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world since 2009 at 828 meters, has reached an impressive size that challenges many architects and engineers. In the 21st century we are experiencing a real boom in skyscrapers, especially in the Middle East, China and Southeast Asia. There are currently 97 buildings that reach 350 meters or more, with almost half of them located in China. The world of high-rise buildings remains dynamic and regularly updated, with the Jeddah Tower project in Saudi Arabia, set to become the world's tallest building at 1,008 meters, still waiting in the future.

Modern media and creative use

Parallel to these developments, technology is also gaining more and more space in our everyday lives. White screens have found a variety of uses beyond simply displaying content. Not only do they provide a bright light source for reading in the dark, but they are also useful for cleaning old monitors or checking the color reproduction of various devices. Interestingly, they can even attract flies! They are often used in creative activities to create a calm visual environment.

Overall, it is clear: whether at school, in architecture or in the digital world – innovative ideas and projects shape the living environment in Diez and beyond. The commitment to climate protection and the promotion of renewable energies is a step in the right direction, while at the same time exciting technical developments are shaping the future.
