100 years of KÖB Iggelheim: A colorful place for encounters and education!
Attention bookworms and reading enthusiasts! On October 28, 2025, the Catholic Public Library (KÖB) in Iggelheim will celebrate its 100th anniversary. This anniversary event not only represents a major celebration, but also the remarkable history of an institution that has had to overcome numerous challenges in its past. The KÖB was founded under the umbrella of the Borromäusverein in Bonn, which was founded in 1845 with the aim of promoting Catholic life in society. What a long tradition!
The library's team of helpers currently consists of 14 dedicated members who work under the direction of Brigitte Klein. The hard-working hands also include Annette Wind, Petra Valceschini and Michaela Bott. It is impressive how this team has been able to maintain the library's popularity despite the adversity the library has experienced in the past due to war, a fire and, most importantly, a lack of helpers. The KÖB is now more popular than ever.
A living library
Where can you find the latest bestsellers in Iggelheim? Of course, in the KÖB! It's not just a place for borrowing and reading - it's a lively place for exchange and education. The library is a meeting place for young and old and offers a variety of events and activities. This mix of tradition and modernity is reflected not only in the offering, but also in the way the library addresses its visitors. A visit to the KÖB is anything but dusty!
As is well known, the history of libraries goes back far into the past. The ancient Egyptians already had large collections of books and many ancient cultures created impressive libraries that served as centers of knowledge. Wikipedia highlights that the first public library in Athens was founded under Peisistratos, thus laying the foundation for the long-term development of libraries. Over the centuries, libraries have experienced ups and downs depending on cultural and political circumstances. The printing press, which emerged in the 15th century, revolutionized the library landscape and enabled knowledge to be distributed more widely.
A place for the future
The KÖB in Iggelheim looks back on an intensive past and is still firmly rooted in the present. It shows how important it is to maintain and expand access to knowledge. In times of digitalization and electronic media, the appeal of printed books remains unbroken. The KÖB is not only a retreat for passionate readers, but also a space that brings the community together and promotes exchange.
The 100th anniversary celebrations will certainly be a special occasion to celebrate the fascination of literature and to recognize the importance of libraries in our society. A visit to the KÖB is more than just a rental - it is a step towards becoming an active part of cultural life in Iggelheim.
