Gigantic US military hospital near Ramstein: 1.46 billion euros for the future!
The largest American military hospital outside the USA is currently being built near the Ramstein base, the largest US military airport in Europe. A modern hospital with 4,680 rooms and 120 treatment rooms will be built on a 47-hectare site and will provide work for around 2,500 people. The construction costs amount to around 1.59 billion US dollars (approx. 1.46 billion euros), with Germany covering proportional planning costs of 266 million euros. This project not only marks a significant advance in medical care for US troops, but also serves a long-term strategy to maintain the American military presence in Europe. According to Rhein-Zeitung, the handover of the new hospital to the US Army is scheduled for 2028.
In total, the clinic will serve approximately 50,000 U.S. military personnel and their families in the region. It will also play an important role in the medical care of around 200,000 soldiers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, especially those wounded in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Alexander Schweitzer, has already visited the construction site to underline the strategic commitment to the US presence on site. He is also planning a delegation trip to the USA to strengthen the partnership, as the Rhein-Zeitung reports.
Economic importance and NATO partnership
During her visit to Weilerbach, Federal Construction Minister Klara Geywitz emphasized that the project is not only a significant contribution to regional economic strength, but also strengthens the partnership between the USA and Germany and thus supports the NATO alliance. The new building is described as a large federal construction project that is scheduled to begin regular operations in the next five years, reported Ärzteblatt.
The new hospital will replace the hospital in Landstuhl, built in 1953, and the Air Force clinic on the base. It not only includes nine operating rooms, but is also intended to act as a hub for medical care for soldiers. The need for a modern hospital is great, as the current hospital in Landstuhl is outdated and hardly meets the requirements. The [Deutschlandfunk Kultur](https://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/nahe-ramstein-im-bau-groesstes- Amerikaes-klinik-100.html) emphasizes that the planned facilities will significantly improve medical care.
Environmental aspects and challenges
Despite the predominantly positive aspects of the project, there were protests against the new building. However, these remained largely unnoticed. The environmental impact studies also revealed the presence of protected species such as wild cats and Bechstein's bats, which led to compensation payments of 12 million euros. Residents and environmentalists are concerned whether these challenges will be adequately addressed in implementation. Nevertheless, it is undisputed that the project will not only significantly improve medical care, but also create hundreds of jobs in the region.
The economic significance of the US military presence in Rhineland-Palatinate is over two billion US dollars per fiscal year, and the 78,000 US soldiers stationed, including around 37,000 in Germany, underline the regional relevance. The hospital is therefore a further building block in international cooperation and will significantly shape the future relationship between Germany and the USA.
