Speyer's rowing team shines at the Midwinter Marathon in Amsterdam!
The Midwinter Marathon in Amsterdam also attracted many rowing enthusiasts this year, on the shortest Saturday before Christmas. In a mild seven degrees Celsius, a total of 72 boats lined up to tackle the challenging 54-kilometer route. Organized by the Roeivereniging RIC, this traditional event attracts extreme long-distance rowers from all over Germany and the Netherlands, who end their year here. Speyer-Kurier reports about the details of this event.
Like every year, the race started early in the morning, with teams having to complete a challenging route through the rural area and back to Amsterdam. The visibility conditions were anything but ideal: heavy fog meant visibility was only around 100 meters. Thanks to precise navigation and GPS support, the team from the racing community RG Speyer/Mannheimer RC/Clever RC/Bonner RV managed to successfully master the first 30 kilometers.
Successful regatta for the RG Speyer
This year the team was represented by the rowers Ulrike Derichs, Frederike Nitsche and Isabella Trauth in the controlled threesome as well as the experienced marathon rower Canan Dockendorf. While the RG Speyer trio clocked a total time of 5 hours and 7 minutes - spending around 24 minutes in the so-called "time-out zone", where rowing is not possible - Dockendorf's quartet only needed 4 hours and 41 minutes for the route, beating the previous record for their boat class by a full ten minutes!
The Midwinter Marathon is not just a competition, but also a social event, which began with a rowing tour through the atmospherically illuminated canals as part of the Light Festival on Friday evening. The atmosphere was unique and offered a festive start to the challenges ahead on Saturday. Orvo reports on arrival details and the excellent organization of the event.
