Waste advice in the Southern Wine Route: Separate correctly for everyone!

On November 4, 2025, the Südliche Weinstraße district's own company, WertstoffWirtschaft (EWW), published clear information on correct waste separation. This is no coincidence, after all, the most recent sorting analyzes show that only 46% of the contents of the residual waste bin can actually be classified as residual waste. The EWW waste consultants are available to commercial food processors as competent contacts.

It is particularly important that leftover food and kitchen waste from restaurants and the food processing industry must not be disposed of in the municipal organic waste bin. The residual waste bin is also not suitable for this waste. These areas often generate large amounts of waste, often containing animal components, which are subject to strict hygiene and disease protection regulations, which makes proper disposal particularly important. According to the legal basis - the Circular Economy Act (KrWG) and the Animal By-Product Disposal Ordinance (TierNebV) - food waste must be handed over to a certified private waste disposal company.

Important steps to avoid waste

Another central point of the EWW information is the need for a corresponding contract with a disposal service provider, which must be presented during inspections. The municipal organic waste bin is intended exclusively for organic waste from private households and vegetable waste from residential property. Waste avoidance is a top priority. Adjusted portion sizes and shopping based on needs are effective ways to reduce waste. If you also plan your food needs well, you can not only avoid waste, but also conserve resources.

In addition to this local information, it is essential not to lose sight of the waste management context. Since the beginning of the 19th century, German waste law has developed significantly in order to effectively combat the connection between a lack of urban hygiene and fatal consequences such as cholera. The first nationwide regulation, the Waste Disposal Act of 1972, laid the foundation for well-thought-out waste management. The EU Waste Framework Directive, last updated in 2018, calls for a rethink in waste management with the aim of conserving natural resources and promoting environmentally friendly disposal processes.

A look at the waste hierarchy

  • 1. Vermeidung von Abfällen
  • 2. Vorbereitung zur Wiederverwendung
  • 3. Recycling
  • 4. Sonstige Verwertung
  • 5. Beseitigung

The waste hierarchy, which has required separate collection for waste paper, waste glass, plastic waste and organic waste since 2015, shows where the priorities lie. With a net waste generation of around 350 million tonnes annually in Germany, an increased focus on environmentally friendly waste management is essential. Whether construction and demolition waste, municipal waste or hazardous waste – the challenge is great.
