Student rescue in Mandern: Fire brigade frees 49 children from bus drama!
In Mandern, a small town in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate, a spectacular school bus accident occurred this morning in which fortunately all 49 students and their bus driver were uninjured. At around 7:40 a.m., the school bus, which was on the way to the Plus secondary school in Kell am See, veered off the narrow, rain-soaked road and slid into a side ditch. A real frightening moment for the children because the bus threatened to tip over. However, the bus driver showed the right instinct and steered in the opposite direction, thereby preventing major damage and injuries.
The situation became dramatic when the children were unable to escape from their seats on their own due to the bus's steep incline. The fire brigade quickly arrived on the scene and secured the bus after creating a forced open side window. The students were gradually rescued using scaffolding and a ladder. The school backpacks were also recovered from the bus. After the successful rescue operation, the children were brought safely to school, while District Road 69 had to be closed briefly during the rescue work. School teachers were also at the scene of the accident to care for and look after the children. Bild.de reports that the fire department did a great job here and everyone involved is fine.
Alarming figures on children's road safety
Unfortunately, such happy turns of events are not always the rule. In 2024, there were 27,261 traffic accidents involving children in Germany, in which 53 children tragically died. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV), 21 of these children died as passengers in cars, 21 as pedestrians, 8 as cyclists and 3 in other forms of transport. The frightening figures make it clear how important the issue of road safety is not only for children, but also for their parents. BMV.de supports numerous prevention and education programs in this area.
The traffic education initiative includes, among other things, a new Pumuckl film that educates children and parents about the dangers of road traffic in ten entertaining videos. There is also the “Child and Traffic” program, which offers free training for parents in daycare centers, as well as interactive hidden object pictures that playfully teach children how to participate in traffic. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to increase the safety of our little ones on the road.
Road safety must always be a priority, especially when it comes to the well-being of children. Incidents like the one in Mandern underline the need for regular training and education to ensure road safety for everyone involved.
