Saarburg High School triumphs at the international math competition!
On June 6, 2025, the region's best mathematics talents were honored at the awards ceremony for the “Mathematics without Borders” competition in the St. Willibrord Gymnasium in Bitburg. There, the mathematics advanced course 1 of MSS 11 at the Saarburg high school took an excellent third place. This competition, held worldwide on March 13, 2025, brought together over 200,000 students who worked in teams on 13 challenging tasks, including a puzzle written in a foreign language.
“Mathematics without Borders”, launched in 1989 by the Académie Strasbourg, is known for its application-oriented approach and the promotion of teamwork. The students have to demonstrate both their mathematical skills and their foreign language skills, which makes this competition particularly dynamic and exciting. The tasks are designed in such a way that they can accommodate and support students with different abilities. The event not only has a local, but also a European, unifying character, which strengthens exchange and cooperation between schools and cultures.
A festival with a musical setting
The award ceremony in Bitburg was opened with an enchanting musical performance by the school choir, which once again underlined the festive mood. Representatives of the competition and the city of Bitburg emphasized the great value of this initiative in promoting mathematical understanding and team spirit. The success of the Saarburg high school was duly celebrated, and the students were able to look forward to a certificate, delicious sweets and a voucher for 150 euros for the Cortina ice cream parlor in Saarburg, sponsored by Volksbank Trier-Eifel.
The event was a great opportunity for participants to not only showcase their math skills, but also get in touch with other talented students from the region. The mathematics advanced course expressed gratitude and acknowledged the organizers and sponsors who made it possible to celebrate this success and raise awareness of mathematics.
Mathematics funding is changing
The “Mathematics without Borders” competition is just one part of the diverse landscape of mathematics competitions that has grown significantly in recent years. These include well-known formats such as the Mathematics Olympiad, the Federal Mathematics Competition, but also the largest mathematical student competition, the Kangaroo of Mathematics. Such events are not only formative for the development of mathematical skills, but also for the promotion of problem-solving skills, as mathematik.de reports.
Overall, it shows that events like “Mathematics without Borders” not only promote mathematical knowledge, but also teamwork, creativity and international understanding. In doing so, they make a valuable contribution to the education and development of young people - and at the same time set the tone for math lessons in an innovative, appealing way.
