Traffic chaos in Trier: construction sites are a hindrance through the city!
A lot is currently happening on the streets in Trier. The construction period also began in the summer, and one thing is clear: Even if there are one or two diversions, the city is doing its best to make everything as smooth as possible. Current traffic disruptions shape the cityscape and require patience from citizens.
A mobile crane is currently being used for elevators on Bonner Straße in Pallien. The lockdown, which has been in force since Monday, is set to last until 7am on Friday, July 11. The road will then be closed again from 10pm on Monday 14th July until Friday 18th July. The elevators are part of the project to improve access to the train tracks at the new Pallien station. During the closure period, the city recommends a diversion via the B51 and A64.
Burst water pipes and renovation work
There are massive traffic problems in the northern part of the city, where burst water pipes have significantly worsened the situation since Tuesday. The leaks below the intersection of Schöndorfer Straße/Wasserweg and Roonstraße have now been repaired. However, there is still asphalting work to be done on Roonstrasse and at the Wasserweg intersection. The municipal utilities plan to reopen a lane here as soon as possible.
Ostallee and Bismarckstrasse are also affected: the left lane in the direction of Trier Nord is closed, as is the intersection of Wasserweg and Franz-Georg-Strasse. Since March, the Roman Bridge has only been used temporarily after one lane was closed to motorized traffic due to damage. An alternative cycle path has been set up on the bridge side. There is currently slow-moving traffic and backlogs here.
Long-term construction measures and investments
Another concern is the Konrad Adenauer Bridge, where the subsidence in one of three carriageways has been repaired. This can be used again after repairs. In order to sustainably improve the city's infrastructure, the city administration is planning an extensive renovation concept for the Roman Bridge, but no information is yet known about details regarding its reopening.
But that doesn't mean other problems haven't cropped up in the city. Next weekend, the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge will be closed from 10 p.m. to midnight due to fireworks. After the Zurlaubener Heimatfest (July 14th - 25th), there will also be construction work on Zurmaiener Straße, which will make one lane inaccessible in both directions.
Dr. Thilo Becker, head of the planning, building and design department, has exciting news: Trier is planning a major investment in road surfaces in 2025, which will amount to a total of 6.8 million euros. That's almost twice as much as in previous years! This increase in the road maintenance budget is intended to encourage more complete resurfacing rather than just stopping potholes. A list of affected streets covers numerous districts, including Ehrang, Kürenz and Mitte.
The city administration is also taking the opportunity to point out that there will also be interesting employment and training offers in 2026. If you are still looking for a suitable job, you can take a look at the city administration website. A voluntary social year in the Office for Fire, Civil Defense and Rescue Services is offered, as are a variety of positions in the Federal Voluntary Service.
What happens next? The exact schedule for the planned work has not yet been determined, but the city administration will regularly inform citizens via the channels. So it remains exciting to see what the coming weeks will bring and whether we will be able to solve the traffic problems sustainably.
