With the “Klimaraum Alleenring” project, Trier is planning an ecologically sustainable redesign to combat climate change.

Future for Trier's Alleenring: New climate project starts!
The city of Trier is facing an important challenge: The Alleenring, a historic green belt around the city center, is not only a popular local recreation area, but also an essential part of the city's climate protection. But many of the trees there are damaged, a situation that is exacerbated by noise and heat 5four reported. In order to counteract this problem, the head of the environment and transport department, Dr. Thilo Becker launched the “Klimaraum Alleenring” project, which aims to prepare this area ecologically and functionally for the future.
The concept is part of a comprehensive federal program that is funded with 4.9 million euros, with up to 85 percent of this coming from federal funds. The funding is part of the “Adaptation of urban and rural areas to climate change” project and shows how seriously the local situation is taken. The data clearly shows that almost 40 percent of trees are at risk from heat and drought, and Trier is one of the regions in Germany that suffers most from the consequences of climate change.
New concept for sustainable urban development
The focus is on many measures that aim to adapt the Alleenring to the climate and promote biodiversity. These include unsealing parking areas, collecting rainwater for irrigation and introducing smart infrastructure such as automated irrigation systems. In addition, climate-tolerant plants and insect-friendly planting should be selected, which will significantly improve the quality of stay. The first construction steps are planned for 2027, with a priority for the Nordallee between the main train station and Porta Nigra.
The city has also launched a European landscape architecture competition to develop innovative concepts for the Alleenring. The suggestions from the population are largely incorporated into the planning. An online survey on citizen participation will also be carried out from July 4th to 13th, 2025, in which citizens can contribute their opinions.
Citizen dialogue and participation
An important date for everyone interested is the Citizens' Dialogue on July 4th in the Rococo Hall (Electoral Palace). Here, up to 80 guests can discuss in four topic groups and contribute their ideas about how the Alleenring should be used and designed in the future. The dialogue will deal with topics such as climate and nature, history, transport and use as well as space and networking. The results of the workshop will be presented publicly from 6 p.m. and participation is free of charge - although registration by email is required.
The city of Trier is relying on a transparent and inclusive planning approach. Only with good cooperation can the Alleenring be sustainably secured as the city's green lung. Given rising temperatures and the associated challenges of climate change, it is more important than ever to act now. The forecasts show that the city not only needs to keep a cool head, but also develop a green thumb in order to deal with ecological problems.
By implementing the “Climate Space Alleenring” project, Trier not only wants to meet the challenges of climate change, but also increase the quality of life for all citizens. In line with the goals of the funding program, the avenue belt will not only be a beautiful place to spend time, but will also make an important contribution to combating climate challenges Trier.de vividly describes.
It is in our hands to work together to ensure a sustainable and livable Trier. The Alleenring is a crucial key – both for the city and for its environment.
