Worms and Bautzen: New impulses for the town twinning!

On July 11, 2025, there was a lot going on in the Worms town hall, as Mayor Adolf Kessel received a delegation from the sister city of Bautzen. The group was led by Bautzen's mayor Karsten Vogt, who, together with representatives of the Friendship Circle Bautzen-Worms e.V., such as former chairman Klaus Martin and his successor Alfred Koch, wanted to strengthen the good cooperation and lively exchange between the two cities. In his welcome speech, Kessel praised the lively contact and the various joint projects that have been repeatedly organized since the official town twinning in 1990.

As part of this visit, Alfred Koch recently went on a citizens' trip to Bautzen, which certainly contributed to deepening the friendship. At this meeting, Karsten Vogt proposed a two-day administrative exchange in 2026, which was enthusiastically received by the Worms side. This shows once again how committed both cities are to actively shaping and strengthening their partnership relationship.

Cultural highlights and future perspectives

The Bautzen delegation also used their visit for a cultural highlight: the premiere of the Nibelungen Festival. Such cultural events not only strengthen the community between the twin cities, they also provide entertaining opportunities for citizens of both cities to get to know each other. Kessel emphasized how important these encounters are to foster mutual understanding.

The town twinning between Worms and Bautzen is one of numerous relationships that German municipalities maintain around the world. In total there are an estimated 6,500 town twinning relationships, with Germany being particularly active. Cologne leads the ranking of German cities with 24 partnerships, followed by Berlin and Darmstadt. This illustrates how valuable these international connections are for the exchange of ideas and experiences and how they contribute to the cultural enrichment of city networks.

A further sign of the future shape of both cities is the planned meeting as part of the Nibelungen Festival in July 2024. Such events open up the opportunity for exchange on central topics such as budgetary issues and economic development, with the Friendship Circle Worms-Bautzen e.V. regularly providing opportunities to maintain the partnership.

Overall, the latest developments show that the town twinning between Worms and Bautzen is not only a valuable legacy, but also a respectable path for the future.
