Star chef reveals: This is how you can make the perfect currywurst with cola!

The currywurst - a classic of German cuisine and a real pleasure! Whether quickly on the snack around the corner or in a fine restaurant, the currywurst has firmly anchored in the hearts of the Germans. And while many gourmet chefs have added their very own note in recent years, one thing remains clear: the right sauce makes the difference.

We take a look at the secret ingredient for the perfect currywurst - and this is where the friendly star chef Christian Bau comes into play. The award-winning chef, who can boast three Michelin stars, is not only known for his fine cuisine at “Victor’s Fine Dining by Christian Bau” in Perl-Nennig, but also for his love of the classic currywurst. A dish that he prepares every four weeks to pamper his team.

The secret ingredient: Coca-Cola

Christian Bau discovered a very special ingredient in his sauce: Coca-Cola. "Reduce two bottles of cola twice, and you already have the perfect balance between sweetness and spice," he says. The cola is boiled down for about 60 minutes to intensify your aroma. It is important to use the classic variant of the cola, not the light or zero version. A bottle is enough for four portions.

Bau himself explains that a good currywurst should be rustic and hearty, without fancy ingredients like goose liver or lobster. The secret lies in a balanced sauce structure, good sausage and a high-quality roll. The only thing you can't get at Bau's restaurant is the currywurst, which is unlike the more sophisticated dishes on the menu.

A popular national dish

Currywurst has over 70 years of tradition in Germany and is considered one of the most popular national dishes. Every year, more than 800 million curry sausages are consumed, which corresponds to about 10 pieces per capita. Her roots go back to 1949, when Herta Heuwer created the first currywurst in Berlin-Charlottenburg, inspired by an English soldier and his special sausage sauce. Since then, the currywurst has developed into a symbol of culinary individuality.

Numerous recipes that have been published in recent years show how diverse the preparation is. A simple, homemade recipe for currywurst sauce can also be found at voi-lecker.de. The ingredients range from sausages and onions to garlic, fresh ginger and of course the secret ingredient – cola. This recipe aims to avoid ready-made products and recreate an authentic currywurst at home.
