The best goose dishes in the region: feast until Christmas comes!

In this warm season when goose and festive cuisine are the center of attention, Cologne offers some of the best addresses for goose dining. Wolfgang Pöttgen, a respected restaurateur, runs a traditional restaurant on Landmannstrasse. The gastronomy was founded by Pöttgen's great-grandparents in 1907 and has enjoyed great popularity ever since. Hospitality and home-style cuisine, especially Cordon Bleu, Wiener Schnitzel and fried potatoes, are very popular here. The goose dishes are currently a real hit.

The Pöttgen restaurant offers a sixth of a goose with side dishes for 29.60 euros or a quarter with two potato dumplings for 44.40 euros. If you want to celebrate big, you can enjoy the roast goose for four people for 195 euros. We recommend a fine Pinot Noir or a Blauer Zweigelt from Austria. Opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to midnight and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

More delicious goose options in the region

Another highlight is the restaurant “auszeit” in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid. Roast goose is served here from October to the end of the year - perfect for anyone who wants to treat themselves to a good time during the cold months. A goose leg with side dishes costs 33.90 euros, while the roast goose for four people with side dishes is available for 139.90 euros. The feast is rounded off with a dry Primitivo from Puglia. The restaurant is open on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays to Saturdays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Gasthaus Paas in Bergisch Gladbach is also dedicated to goose fans and offers its specialties until mid-January. Here the goose leg with side dishes costs 27.90 euros and the goose breast costs 28.90 euros. For larger celebrations there is the festive goose for 149.90 euros. Wine lovers will also get their money's worth here: organic red wines from Domaine de Tholomies and Doppio Passo Primitivo are the recommended companions. Opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Special features of the goose dishes

The Weissenburg in Cologne specializes in goose dishes and only offers these by advance order. Here, guests can enjoy a leg of goose with side dishes for 35.50 euros or a delicious two-course menu for 39.50 euros. The dessert, a marzipan apple on vanilla sauce with berry compote, should also not be missed. The wine “3 Reben red” from the Palatinate goes perfectly with the food. The Weissenburg is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (Sunday and Monday) and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (Tuesday to Saturday).

Last but not least, the Ringshausers Restaurant & Wine Bar in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is a place where a three-course goose menu is offered for 54.90 euros. The menu begins with a lamb's lettuce, followed by either goose breast or leg and ends sweetly with a warm plum roaster with vanilla parfait. We recommend a cuvée of Frühburgunder and Merlot or a Chardonnay from the Burggarten winery. Opening hours are Thursday and Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The variety of goose dishes shows how deeply rooted the tradition is in local gastronomy. This winter season there are numerous opportunities to meet up with friends and family and enjoy a good meal. The combination of delicious food and good wine creates an ideal atmosphere for sociable evenings.
