Abitur duel in Homburg: Johanneum is crowned football champion!

On July 4, 2025, a sporting highlight was brought to life on Jahnplatz in Homburg: the high school seniors of the Saarpfalz-Gymnasium and the Johanneum High School played a thrilling football game. This premiere created a lively atmosphere, characterized not only by exciting games, but also by loud support from their classmates. Drums, chants and flying confetti created a great backdrop in which everyone involved felt comfortable. Alderman Philipp Scheidweiler took on the role of representative for the mayor at the award ceremony, while the professional referees from the Homburg referee group conducted the events on the pitch fairly.

The game started with a brilliant start, with the Saarpfalz-Gymnasium initially taking a clear lead and leading 2-1 at halftime. But the Johanneum students did not give up. In a dramatic final phase, they managed to equalize in stoppage time and score the decisive winning goal to make it 3-2. Headmaster Oliver Schales admitted that he no longer believed in victory while the Johanneum players celebrated their triumph with the iconic song “We are the Champions”.

Community and fair play in focus

The organizers of this event, including committed student representatives, not only found the framework, but also sponsors and put together a gastronomic offer. The proceeds from the sale will benefit the high school graduation funds of both schools. Headmaster Katja Grauvogel praised the effort and commitment of the organizers and particularly emphasized the equality achieved through the participation of female players. In a further symbolic step, Alderman Scheidweiler presented a financial contribution from the city for the Abikaskasse, which further strengthened the feeling of community and cohesion between the schools.

This event is not isolated, as other important decisions in school football took place in the previous week. There was the highest number of participants in the boys' primary school championship with 94 school teams. The victory in this tournament went to the Brebach elementary school, which won the final against the Medelsheim elementary school 3-2. Different age groups in “Youth training for the Olympics” also ensured exciting matches and great emotions in the region.

A look ahead

With the final day on July 5th in Brebach, another sporting highlight is coming up. The organization behind these competitions is becoming increasingly stronger through the targeted development of talent and the support of institutional football associations. The aim is not only to encourage fun in the game, but also to focus on team spirit and fair play. School football has long since established itself as an important pillar in the children's and youth sector, as various associations repeatedly communicate.

With positive experiences from such events, school football in the region will continue to grow, and the anticipation for the next tournament on July 9, 2024 in St. Wendel is already noticeable. The school communities are actively working to make their next performance as exciting as possible and thus bring team spirit to the fore. A sporting summer that brings students and teachers together is upon us - and we can all look forward to it! In addition, emphasis continues to be placed on promoting girls' and women's football, which was particularly commendable at the most recent event.
