Homburg celebrates 50 years of flea market: A look at Breit's legacy!
The Homburg flea market, one of the largest and best-known in southwest Germany, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It was founded in 1975 by the Werbegemeinschaft Homburg e.V. and has since enjoyed great popularity among young and old. The market is now organized by Homburger Kultur gGmbH. In fact, it not only attracts locals, but also numerous guests from France, Luxembourg and Belgium. On the best days, especially in summer, up to 1,000 dealers are active and offer a colorful range of rarities, antiques and all sorts of bric-a-brac, which always attracts little treasure hunters.
An important person behind this tradition is Hugo Breit, the 92-year-old former head of the cultural office. Breit was significantly involved in the development of the flea market and was not deterred by initial obstacles. He not only took the flea market to a new level, but also ensured that Homburg was perceived as a cultural city in the region. He brought artists and event formats into play that enriched cultural life. Breit was particularly active in classical music and maintained close contacts with many artists in order to avoid confusion with neighboring Bad Homburg.

The flea market takes place regularly on the first Saturday of every month, unless there is a public holiday on this date - in which case it is postponed by a week.
