Life-threatening situation at Bostalsee: DLRG saves young women!

Yesterday, June 22, 2025, the Bostalsee near Nohfelden became the scene of a dramatic rescue operation. Two young women find their lives in acute danger when they need help in the water outside the guarded bathing area. Fortunately, DLRG lifeguards from the main station at the pedal boat rental noticed the emergency and were able to get the women out of the water in time. This situation ended happily for everyone involved, but this cannot obscure the potential dangers of unsecured zones. Philipp Scherer, the deputy head of operations at the DLRG Saar regional association, warned urgently about the risks of such bathing areas that are not adequately monitored. Sol.de reports that neither the women had swimming skills nor were familiar with the dangers in these areas.

The weekend not only brought this incident: there were also several medical emergencies at the Losheim reservoir. To ensure the safety of bathers, the DLRG is regularly in operation between Easter and October, especially on warm weekends and during the summer holidays. Last year, the organization carried out 149 water rescue missions, saved 216 people and had to intervene in several life-threatening situations, as the DLRG itself reports. The most common operations involved pedal boat users, but also swimmers in acutely dangerous situations - a total of 22 rescues, including four in life-threatening situations.

Safety at Bostalsee and beyond

In Germany, the DLRG largely takes over the water rescue service. This includes not only monitoring swimming beaches, but also responding to emergencies, monitoring water sports activities and providing assistance in the event of swimming, boating and even ice accidents. The safety of bathers and water sports enthusiasts has top priority, and the DLRG organizes its operations independently in order to be able to respond to emergencies in the best possible way. However, it is important that all bathers are aware of the conditions of the respective water areas - not all bodies of water are constantly monitored. This is particularly true for unsecured bathing areas, where the dangers can increase significantly.

It remains to be hoped that the recent incidents at Bostalsee will cause bathers to change their minds so that everyone develops the necessary awareness of their own safety and takes the dangers posed by unsecured zones seriously in the future.
