The “Digital Wares Forest” project makes the Gallo-Roman settlement tangible for everyone. Presentation on July 13th as part of the excavation festival.

Virtual Wareswald: Discover Roman history up close!
An exciting project is taking shape: The “Digital Wareswald – Rediscovering History” will make the Gallo-Roman settlement “Vicus Wareswald” between Oberthal, Tholey and Marpingen accessible to the general public. How Weekly Mirror Online reports, it's all about high-resolution 3D reconstructions, which are created in collaboration with Terrex gGmbH, the company behind the excavations. The project, which is being implemented as part of the federally funded Smart Cities model project, not only provides an insight into the once flourishing settlement, but also into its fascinating history.
The 3D reconstructions are the heart of the initiative. Scientific meticulousness is used to recreate the buildings and structures, even if not all details can be verified. A virtual animated film and a virtual museum are also planned, which will bring the stories behind the finds to life. Digital content will be accessible via QR codes on information boards on site. And best of all: the project will be presented during an excavation festival on July 13th.
Festive presentation and supporting program
The festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and offers a rich program. Visitors can look forward to a few highlights, including Roman legionnaires from the reinactment group “Legio XIIII Gemina”, a team of horses with a Roman triumphal chariot and the opportunity for show cooking and archery. Workshops on making Roman perfumes and ointments are also on the agenda. Families can look forward to many activities including Roman games and clay crafts.
The guided tours led by the project manager Dr. Klaus-Peter Henz will be guided to the latest finds in the temple area at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Those interested in botany can take part in a guided tour with qualified biologist Michael Keller at 12 p.m. District Administrator Udo Recktenwald emphasizes that the digitization project offers a modern experience of the historical heritage and thus makes a significant contribution to cultural communication.
Technology and historical discoveries
The application of digital technologies is an increasingly important topic in archaeology. How on OAPR can be read, artificial intelligence plays a crucial role. This includes historical pattern recognition, image analysis and prediction of potential discovery locations through data analysis. Such technologies are not only groundbreaking for the excavations in the Wareswald, but also for the entire discipline.
Bundle additionally Archaeologica and other digital platforms join forces to develop interactive models of artifacts and historical buildings. The reconstructions of the Vicus Wareswald are just one example of a large number of innovative projects that transfer cultural heritage into a lively digital format.
With this groundbreaking approach, the “Digital Wares Forest” project shows how historical places can be experienced in a new way using modern technologies and a little creativity. A great opportunity to discover and understand your own history!
