Heider Local History Museum is looking for post-war evidence for an exciting exhibition!
In Heide, more precisely on the Museum Island Lüttenheid, the Heider Heimatmuseum is launching an exciting call for collection of memorabilia from the post-war period. From now on, citizens are invited to provide everyday objects, documents and personal memories from the period between 1945 and 1968. Like that NDR reports, a joint exhibition is to be created with the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium that will bring the experiences and stories of this eventful era to life.
What is particularly interesting for citizens is the request to contribute letters, diaries and administrative documents that provide very personal insights into life during and after the war. Individual items that are linked to special stories are also very welcome. A notable example is an encounter in which a Heider woman came forward to report on a milk can that she was carrying across the farm during a shelling in 1945.

A look at the post-war period
The opportunity to engage with history after the Second World War is not only important locally. The German Digital Library offers numerous resources that provide deeper insight into this period. This includes picture galleries, virtual exhibitions and articles on important events such as the Berlin Airlift or the “Monuments Men”. Such offerings make it possible to explore the diverse stories and perspectives of the post-war years.
The initiatives of the Heider Heimatmuseum and the Museum Island Lüttenheid are not only a valuable addition to local history, but they also promote a sense of community. The memories and objects collected will help to record the experiences of the post-war period for future generations. So if you still have an old suitcase or an exciting story in your closet, you shouldn't be afraid to present it to the museum. There's something going on!
