Traffic chaos on the A7: construction sites caused massive restrictions!

The traffic situation on the A7 is currently being closely monitored by travelers and commuters due to extensive renovation work in the direction of Flensburg. As of Friday, October 24, 2025, at 10 a.m., construction work has begun due to significant asphalt damage on this important artery. The restrictions extend between the Schnelsen-Nord and Henstedt-Ulzburg junctions in the Segeberg district, where only one lane will be available until October 31, 2025, 5 a.m. The Quickborn entrance and exit in the Pinneberg district will also remain closed until Monday, October 27, 2025. The NDR reports that the Hamburg-Schnelsen-Nord or Henstedt-Ulzburg junctions can be used as alternatives.

The construction work shows how urgently there is a need for action in maintaining the transport infrastructure in Germany. Well-developed transport routes are not only of central importance for daily commuting, but also for economic growth. According to Statista, Germany has the largest transport infrastructure system in Europe. Nevertheless, many parts of the rail infrastructure are in need of renovation. In this context, attention is also drawn to the financial aspects; A total of around 8.47 billion euros will be available for road traffic in 2023 to maintain federal roads and motorways.

Construction sites and traffic safety

In addition to the renovations mentioned, further construction sites are also expected on the A7. For example, on October 28, 2025, in the direction of Hanover, not only the left lane at Hannover-Anderten, but also various lanes between Göttingen and Northeim-West will be closed. In the months of August to October, the state road construction authority (LBV) noted a high number of construction sites, which leads to increased traffic volumes and potential traffic jams. This is also confirmed by the Verkehrslage platform.

With the upcoming work, a complete closure of the A1 at the Bargteheide motorway junction is expected next weekend, which will mean additional restrictions for road users. The information about slipping hazards caused by slippery winter conditions, mobile speed cameras and obstacles on the road make it clear how important it is to take road safety seriously and to observe the relevant warnings.

Investments in infrastructure

The need for regular investments in transport infrastructure is undisputed. While around 70% of motorway bridges are already in a “satisfactory” or better condition, the challenge remains to comprehensively renovate the heavily used rail routes by 2030. The associated closures and diversions could significantly impact traffic and underline the need for ongoing discussions about the transport transition in Germany.

In summary, the measures on the A7 are temporary but necessary to maintain the transport infrastructure and ensure smooth traffic flow. It remains to be hoped that the work can progress quickly and regardless of the weather.
