The accordion: An evening with Yuliya Zhyvitsa in Ahrensburg!
On July 14, 2025, an exciting event will take place in Ahrensburg that will appeal to music lovers and everyone who wants to become one. Under the title “Introducing instruments: The accordion with Yuliya Zhyvitsa”, the St. Johannes Ahrensburg support association in cooperation with the Ahrensburg Region Citizens Foundation invites you to the St. Johanneskirche. It starts at 7:30 p.m. and entry is free, although donations for the maintenance of the church are welcome. The event offers an excellent opportunity to experience the versatility of the accordion, presented by award-winning musician and teacher Yuliya Zhyvitsa.
Yuliya Zhyvitsa, who moved from Minsk to Germany in 2009, learned her craft at the state music school in her homeland (1999-2003) and has been an integral part of the music scene ever since. After studying church music at the Lübeck University of Music - with a major in organ - the native Belarusian has been cantor at the St. Laurentius Church in Süsel since October 2017. She is not only dedicated to church music, but also teaches at the Herzogtum Lauenburg district music school in Mölln and at the Oldeslo music school. Here she not only teaches technical skills, but also promotes the joy of making music.
A versatile instrument
Yuliya Zhyvitsa describes the accordion as an incredibly versatile instrument. From baroque to klezmer and tango to jazz – the range of sounds is almost unlimited. In her lessons, she places great emphasis on emotional expression and encourages her students to express themselves musically. “You can start playing the accordion at any age,” she emphasizes, showing that making music is a wonderful opportunity to develop personal skills.
In her lessons, she not only teaches the students how to control the bellows and the correct posture, but also addresses the understanding of musical texts, which is of great importance for making music. She also recommends renting the instrument first in order to make the right choice before purchasing.
Accordion lessons for everyone
Anyone interested can start taking accordion lessons from around the age of seven. Specific materials are required at home, including your own accordion, a music stand and a metronome. During lessons, the focus is on individual support and working on different repertoire genres. Attention is also paid to the importance of hand position and body language in order to avoid possible damage to posture, as these aspects are also crucial for the students' expressiveness and playing technique.
The accordion, also known as a concertina or hand harmonica, has a long tradition and a special place in the music world. First named the “Accordion” by Cyrill Demian in Vienna in 1829, it has been delighting people all over the world ever since with its impressive sound possibilities.
So join us on July 14th as Yuliya Zhyvitsa explains the wonders of this enchanting instrument and how it can open the way for musicians of all ages to express their creativity. A great opportunity to listen, learn and maybe even try things out!
