Ninety square meters for everyone: barrier-free apartments in Grabau from 2026!

Something exciting is currently happening on Grover Weg in Grabau: eight new, barrier-free apartments are being planned, which will help to enable older citizens to live a comfortable and self-determined life in familiar surroundings. These apartments will not only be equipped with an elevator, but will also offer a meeting point in the form of a roof terrace with a winter garden. This creates a space for meetings and social exchange, which is already very popular in the community.

Construction work is already well underway and the shell is scheduled to be completed at the end of September 2023 – a full four weeks earlier than originally expected. Mayor Bernd Granzow was pleased with the progress at the topping-out ceremony, which took place on August 8th. The specially buried time capsule, filled with construction plans, coins and a current newspaper, offers an interesting look at the construction process and the future of Grabau. The eight units are expected to be fully completed by spring 2026.

Details about the new living spaces

The new apartments are offered in different sizes: from small 55 square meters to large 95 square meters. A two-story building with two wings is being created, which not only creates modern living space, but also helps to meet the social needs of the residents and their relatives. The rents are calculated at 15 euros per square meter, which means that the monthly costs will be between 825 and 1425 euros.

In the first phase, the selection and award is made to the citizens of Grabau, whereby interested parties should also indicate their age and possible degree of disability in their application forms. If demand exceeds the available apartments, the allocation could also be opened to first-degree relatives of Grabau citizens. This strategic approach shows how important the community takes the local population.

Integration with other offers

In addition to the barrier-free apartments, the municipality is also planning a daycare center in the immediate vicinity, although the schedule is still unclear as an agreement with the special-purpose association is still pending. Planning began very early: the land use plan was changed in April 2019, followed by an architectural competition in which the best ideas were collected. Ultimately, the selected design comes from architect Bernd Kroll from Duvensee.

Grabau already has a variety of offers for seniors, such as assisted living and outpatient care services. These facilities are important because they provide support in living arrangements and promote social interaction so that older people can remain in their familiar surroundings. These include, among others, Living in Old Age, which offer various forms of living and care that meet the needs of seniors.

With these new apartments on Grover Weg, Grabau shows that the municipality has a good hand when it comes to barrier-free living. Not only will new living space be created, but also a space for social interaction, which will be of great value to future residents and the entire community.
