Wolves in Schleswig-Holstein: Hunting does not create solutions for animal owners!

There are currently heated discussions about how to deal with wolves in Schleswig-Holstein. The state's Environment Ministry has made it clear that shooting wolves is not a sustainable solution to the conflicts between animal owners and wild animals. Rather, it is emphasized that preventive herd protection, particularly through the construction of fences, is necessary to resolve these problems Daily newspaper reported.

The wolf was classified as “protected” by the EU, but no longer as “strictly protected”. Despite this classification, the protection status in Germany remains unchanged, as the wolf continues to fall under the Federal Nature Conservation Act and is therefore strictly and particularly protected. Hunting for wolves is currently prohibited, although states may allow exceptions.

Challenges for animal owners

A central problem in Schleswig-Holstein is that wolves often prey on small farm animals such as sheep. The necessary fences are often missing or are not constructed correctly. In the so-called wolf prevention areas, which are located in the districts of Herzogtum Lauenburg, Pinneberg, Dithmarschen, Steinburg and Segeberg, animal owners have the opportunity to apply for compensation for killed animals, provided they have the appropriate fences.

There are currently three wolf packs living in Schleswig-Holstein. A pack lives in the Segeberg district that includes one adult, two to three young animals and at least five puppies. In addition, two adults were detected in the Langenlehstener Heide, also in the Duchy of Lauenburg district. Another pack in the Sachsenwald consists of two adults and one pup, but has not been seen since May. In the last 25 years, a total of 19 dead wolves have been found in Schleswig-Holstein, with most of them, 18, dying in traffic accidents.

It shows that energy and clear measures are necessary to get the conflict between wild animals and animal owners under control. The world is changing, and if you want to do good business with your animals, you also have to have the right hand when it comes to herd protection.
