Discover politics up close: Open Day in the Kiel State Parliament!
On Sunday, July 13, 2025, the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament in Kiel will open its doors to everyone interested in politics. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the event, which takes place from the state house at Düsternbrooker Weg 70, invites you to experience political activity up close and to take an active part. Admission is free and the state house can be easily reached by bus or bicycle, which will be a welcome opportunity for many to find out about the most important topics and decisions.
Die Landtagspräsidentin Kristina Herbst wird die Veranstaltung um 10 Uhr eröffnen und die Besucherinnen und Besucher durch das vielseitige Programm begleiten. The highlight of the day is the open plenary hall, where representatives are available to immerse themselves in discussions about current debates. There will also be talks with politicians who will answer questions from citizens.
Diverse offers for all age groups
The open day is more than just a look behind the scenes of the state parliament. The state parliamentary groups of the CDU, Greens, SPD, FDP and SSW are actively involved in shaping the program and offer numerous opportunities to get involved. Finally, on the ground floor, those interested can obtain information about state and federal medals and even submit suggestions for volunteers to receive the award. The young talent marketing department presents over 30 different training and study programs.
A varied family program is offered for the little ones: from ponies to a bouncy castle to a stage show with Piet Rocket. Young people can test their knowledge on the Democracy-O-Mat and demonstrate their skills on the Mega-Foosball game. Musical entertainment comes from bands such as Norma & Band and Just 2-4-1, while the poetry slam in Low German showcases the region's creative streak.
Democracy education for everyone
At a time when democratic values are being tested worldwide, the event also offers a platform to promote knowledge and skills for democratic participation. It is important that all age groups actively participate. Democracy education begins in daycare and continues through schools and universities to adult education. The influence of education on social participation is becoming increasingly relevant. Only together can we succeed in reducing prejudice and discrimination and strengthening social cohesion. This is also where the Democracy Workshop offers, where young and old can design their own buttons.
A free shuttle bus from Kiel ZOB takes visitors to the event every 15 minutes. There are also 350 guarded bicycle parking spaces and a pop-up rental bike station at the Reventlou Bridge so that all visitors can travel comfortably and safely. So if you're interested in an exciting day full of information, exchange and participation, you should mark July 13, 2025 in red in your calendar!
