Water sports leaders: Discover Kiel's secrets on the fjord!

Kiel, the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein, has a lot to offer when it comes to the wonderful combination of studying and water sports. The city, which is known as an important port on the Baltic Sea, not only scores with a breathtaking coastline of around 35 kilometers, but also with a performance center for sailing and surfing. A very special experience – ideal for all students who want to enjoy their free time actively and by the water. As Fachhochschule Kiel describes, numerous water sports activities can be easily carried out while studying in Kiel.

The Kiel Fjord offers numerous opportunities for swimming and relaxation. Bathing areas like the bathing jetty in Reventlou are real attractions, especially in summer. The bathing season starts here at the beginning of June and the 30 x 35 meter swimming area is available free of charge. Changing rooms and toilets are also available. Even if swimming operations are monitored, non-swimmers should be careful.

Versatile swimming areas and water sports

Another popular place to go is the seaside resort of Düsternbrook. Visitors can swim here and enjoy the fresh Baltic Sea air from the beginning of June until September 8th - at a reduced price of just 3.50 euros for adults. If you want to get active, there is a wide range of water sports in Kiel. Above all, sailing, which offers great opportunities here in the inner fjord for both beginners and advanced sailors. Professional sailing schools and the KOP Kiel offer suitable courses to immerse yourself in the world of sailing.

But that's not enough! Windsurfing, kiting and winging are very important in Kiel. There are various surfing stations along the coast that offer courses and equipment rental. The spots on Strander Strand and in Laboe are particularly popular. The aim here is to conquer the water and, with a bit of luck, find a perfect wind!

From canoe to dragon boat

The possibilities for water sports are almost endless. Stand-up paddling has established itself as a popular leisure activity in recent years. On the Schwentine, for example, there are first-class entry opportunities. You can try out paddling at the Kiel Canoe Club or the Kiel Canoe Association, who rent out their canoes at the Schwentine estuary and in Preetz. If you want to experience the sporting activity in a group, you can also take part in the Kiel dragon boat race. Schools and companies take part here, and the Kiel University of Applied Sciences puts together a dedicated team.

A particularly exciting project is “Studying under sail”. This elective module, which is offered in the summer semester on the traditional sailing ship Thor Heyerdahl, shows how diverse student life is in Kiel and combines academic education with maritime adventure.

Overall, it can be said that Kiel impresses not only with its maritime character, but also with its extensive range of water sports. Whether you ride the waves while surfing, conquer the vastness of the sea while sailing or simply relax while swimming - there is something for everyone in Kiel. It seems like the city is a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts and the perfect backdrop for an active student life.
