New coach Timo Schultz: Osnabrück is a sleeping giant!

The football world is currently looking forward to Osnabrück because VfL has a new man at the helm: Timo Schultz was introduced as head coach on Tuesday. The 47-year-old football teacher brings a wealth of experience and has caused a sensation in the past both as a player and as a coach. Schultz, who played 16 times as an active player against VfL Osnabrück, expressed great anticipation at his introduction for the upcoming task, which for him is much more than just managing the 3rd league.

In a conversation with managing director Michael Welling and sports director Joe Enochs, Schultz emphasized that he wanted to approach the challenges of the new season with conviction. Given last season's weak home record, it is particularly important to him that the team appears more dominant at home. “We need to make changes to achieve better results,” he said, while describing the club as a “sleeping giant” with potential for positive development in the next two to three years.

An encouragement for the team

Timo Schultz, born in Wittmund and originally active as a midfielder, has dedicated himself to dynamic and attacking football both as a player and as a coach. At Osnabrück, his defensive strategy is combined with a three-man chain. The offensive orientation, which includes one or two leaders, still depends on the squad planning. Last season, VfL finished just shy of relegation, and Schultz doesn't want to make any big demands here as long as the squad isn't complete.

His stubborn will to play bold, run-intensive football could be exactly what the team needs. “I would like us to find more solutions in attack,” he continued, underlining the need to inspire fans with attractive football. Schultz, who has already worked as head coach at FC St. Pauli and 1. FC Köln, will be on the pitch for the first time at the start of training on Monday.

From the roots to the heights

His career as a player was filled with many successes, including promotion with FC St. Pauli to the 1st Bundesliga, where he made his debut on September 25, 2010 against Borussia Dortmund. After his playing days, he started working with the youth team at St. Pauli and eventually made the leap to head coach of the professional team. After a short and turbulent time at FC Basel and a later stint in Cologne, where he was unable to prevent relegation, Schultz has now accepted the challenge of leading VfL Osnabrück back into better waters.

“I have no intention of just managing the 3rd league,” Schultz made it clear. He is determined to strive for a quiet but ambitious development with his new team and will do everything in his power to delight the Osnabrück fans with passionate football.

In a city often described as passionate and football-crazy, expectations are high, and Schultz could be the right man at the right time to meet those expectations. The coming weeks will show what the future challenges will be and whether Timo Schultz's visions will take shape.
