The situation on the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas has developed dramatically today, June 30, 2025. Like that Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency Reportedly, multiple storm surges have occurred on the Baltic Sea in recent years. Five storm surges were recorded in the 2022/2023 season alone, while there were seven in the previous season. The level evaluations also show a worrying trend: the average water levels on the Baltic Sea have risen sharply in some cases, which is particularly noticeable during flood events.
The water level is important today not only on the Baltic Sea, but also on the North Sea. The current water level is 615 cm, which is 17 cm below mean water, but here too the values are not always constant. Last year the water level was 13 cm above mean water. As a rule, the typical features such as the differentiation according to storm surge classes can also be seen here: up to 2 meters above the mean water level.

This increase also highlights how important it is to observe the rules of conduct during storm surges. This includes, among other things, turning off the electricity and gas, securing personal belongings and planning suitable escape routes to protect yourself and others.
Warning systems and flood control center
The various warning channels provided by the federal and state authorities play an essential role in such situations. Flood control centers are active in every federal state and use various communication channels such as radio, television, cell phones and social media to inform the population in a timely manner. Given the frequent storm surges, it is of great importance that these systems function well and that all citizens know how to behave in an emergency.
The current situation on the coasts should not be underestimated. Every year, residents and the fire department in heavily affected areas experience impressive flood events.
