Neumünster: New day clinic helps young people combat anxiety disorders!

The FEK in Neumünster has been helping young patients for 20 years in the form of a psychiatric children's day clinic and outpatient clinic. Now there has been an important step in promoting the mental health of young people: the opening of a new day clinic created specifically for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18. This facility is of great importance because anxiety disorders and panic attacks are widespread and can severely limit the lives of those affected. Dr. Christiane Petersen, chief physician at the Clinic for Child, Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, leads the holistic treatment team and shows that the concerns of young people are specifically addressed here.

The day clinic relies on comprehensive diagnostics at the beginning of treatment in order to clarify the patients' individual goals and motivations. The team, which also includes therapist Annique Mielke, ensures that the therapy is based on modern, evidence-based methods. During the usual treatment period of 8 to 10 weeks, young people have the opportunity to learn how to deal with their fears in a safe environment. The focus here is on both psychotherapeutic and nursing-therapeutic individual discussions, which take place regularly.

Therapy content and offer

What exactly can young people expect in the new day clinic? The treatment includes various elements such as:

  • ärztliche Visiten
  • Ergotherapie
  • Musiktherapie
  • Bewegungs- und Sporttherapie, z.B. Pilates
  • Entspannungsverfahren wie NADA-Akupunktur und progressive Muskelentspannung
  • psychosoziale Beratung durch Sozialpädagog:innen

An important part of the therapy is also individual supplementation on topics such as self-esteem, dealing with feelings and stress regulation. The team has a good knack for combining therapy and practical life adjustments - the young people also have access to a fully equipped kitchen and the provision of breakfast and lunch.

The role of therapy dogs and reports from young people

In addition, a therapy dog, Phoebe, an Australian Shepherd, plays an important role in the young people's therapy. Animals can often have a positive impact on emotional well-being. Two teenagers report on their positive experiences in the day clinic and emphasize how much the offer helped them to overcome their fears and work on panic attacks.

Collaboration between medical professionals, therapists and young people and their families is crucial. An individual team of therapists accompanies the patients permanently during their therapy and ensures a relationship of trust that is essential for the healing process. Overall, it shows that the new day clinic in Neumünster is a step in the right direction to offer young people in crisis situations the support they need to overcome their fears and develop new behaviors.
