Fun and inclusion: Water sports event inspires families in Ostholstein!

An extraordinary water sports trial day took place on June 30, 2025 in the quiet atmosphere of the “watersports4all” surfing and sailing school in Großenbrode. Organized by the Family Support Service (FuD) of Lebenshilfe Ostholstein e.V. in collaboration with Sail United e.V., the day was all about inclusion. Families with children with disabilities or needing care were able to experience an unforgettable day on the water, accompanied by the motto “Water sports for everyone”. Thanks to the generous support of a donation from Deutsche Vermögensberatung, participation was free for the six families present.

The activities were diverse and offered every family member the opportunity to actively participate. Whether it was stand-up paddling on huge XXL boards, kayaking or a fast ride on the banana – the joy and the many new experiences were clearly noticeable. It was particularly important that all participants, regardless of physical limitations, were able to actively participate in water sports. The specially trained employees ensured safety and a smooth process so that everyone could feel safe.

Shared experience and exchange

Another positive element of the trial day was the exchange between the families. Together with other parents who are overcoming similar challenges, they were able to share experiences and receive mutual support. Sascha Hensel from Lebenshilfe Ostholstein e.V., who accompanied the project, has already announced a repeat event because the day was very well received by the families.

But inclusion in water sports is not just limited to this event. The organization Sail United e.V. has launched another exciting project that makes wingfoiling accessible to people with disabilities. Initiator Tobias Michelsen describes this newly thought-out sport offering, which enables wing foiling while sitting, as a premiere in Germany. This innovative approach is aimed at people with physical limitations of all ages and offers them individual, low-threshold access to water sports.

The goal is to create confidence in one's own abilities and to enable a self-determined entry into this sport. There are also plans to train trainers and publish learning videos to support Sail United's inclusive vision. This commitment is supported by Aktion Mensch and shows that water sports are possible for everyone.

A look at inclusion in sport

The message is clear: There is something going on! Whether on the water or on the sports field – inclusion is not just a term, but a living practice that is reaching more and more people. Every initiative that makes sport more accessible to all people takes another step towards a fairer and more inclusive society.
