Fire drama in Kiel: Several rescuers fight against thick smoke!
Today, December 29, 2025, the Integrated Regional Control Center (IRLS) was informed at 4:45 p.m. of a fire in a garbage shelter on Elisabethstrasse in Kiel. The reports came not only from concerned residents, but also from emergency calls from an adjacent apartment building, where there was heavy smoke and some people were possibly trapped on the upper floors. The situation was quickly classified as critical, which led to the immediate alerting of additional fire and rescue service units, reported News.de.
On site, the operations manager confirmed the serious situation: the garbage shelter was ablaze and the door to the stairwell had already burned through, cutting off the escape route for the residents. Thick smoke reached the upper floors of the building, which is why several people had to be rescued from the danger zone with the help of a turntable ladder. A total of around 60 members of the professional and volunteer fire brigade, rescue service, police and municipal utilities were deployed to bring the situation under control. Loud Kn online 14 people were spotted by the emergency services, several of whom were transported to hospitals in Kiel with smoke poisoning.
Rapid firefighting
Fighting the fire began immediately with several teams using heavy breathing apparatus and C-pipes. The fire was finally brought under control just 15 minutes after the start of the operation. Nevertheless, the extinguishing work continued into the evening, while the fire brigade members continued their measures to ensure that no embers remained.
After fighting the fire, the scene was handed over to the police for further investigation into the cause of the fire, who have now initiated an investigation. There is currently no information on the exact cause of the fire, which is often the case as such investigations can be complex. The rapid response of the emergency services and their coordinated firefighting show how important well-trained firefighters are in such critical situations. The events in Kiel remind us how crucial fire protection measures in residential areas are in order to minimize the risk to human life and make the work of emergency services easier.
