Half-hourly service between Kiel and Hamburg: Commuters rejoice!

Rail commuters in Schleswig-Holstein can look forward to a significant improvement in train traffic. The Schleswig-Holstein local transport association has announced that a half-hour service will be introduced between Kiel and Hamburg from mid-December 2025. Loud NDR This project is the result of intensive planning and a long-standing wish of many commuters, as State Secretary for Transport Susanne Henckel emphasized.

The timetable is currently not optimal because the departure times of the RE7 and RE70 lines are staggered. While the RE7 always sets off for Hamburg two minutes after the hour, the RE70 only follows 20 minutes later. This currently leads to waiting times of around 40 minutes until the next train leaves. This will change with the new departure times: the RE70 trains will in future depart for Hamburg a quarter of an hour later and, conversely, start a quarter of an hour earlier towards Kiel.

Optimization of train connections

The main goal of the new timetable is to create an almost exact 30-minute rhythm, especially between Neumünster and Hamburg. This means that commuters have to spend significantly less time at the station and can plan better. However, the timetables still have to be coordinated with DB InfraGO.

The last few months have not been easy for rail traffic, not least due to the failures at Erixx and Nordbahn, which can be attributed to Deutsche Bahn's expansion measures. The ongoing developments and the disputes surrounding the tender for rail traffic between Hamburg, Kiel and Flensburg are currently being heard before the Schleswig Higher Regional Court. The issue of frequent train cancellations is perceived as increasingly problematic by many commuters, especially in light of the local transport association's warnings that storms could lead to further cancellations in the future.

Data protection and customer service

With all of these changes, it is important to know that the Nahverkehrsverbund Schleswig-Holstein GmbH, which is responsible for the new service offerings, also attaches great importance to data protection. According to the company's website NAH.SH, personal data will only be collected and processed within the framework of the legal provisions. The use of the ticket shop, which is operated by AKN Eisenbahn GmbH, requires, for example, the provision of certain data to process orders.

The company also uses modern technologies to analyze and optimize its website, while ensuring compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Passengers have the right to information about their processed data and to correction or deletion of information.

Overall, it shows that local transport in Schleswig-Holstein is on the right track. With the desired increase in frequency and a stronger focus on data protection, rail operations will not only be made more efficient but also safer for passengers. This makes commuting between Kiel and Hamburg a pleasure from December.
