Kiel in the grip of security: Police find weapons at the main train station!

In Kiel, the police have increased controls in public spaces after several knife attacks. This measure aims to increase citizens' sense of security. On June 12, 2025, intensive identity checks were carried out at various locations, including in the Gaarden district, at Preetz train station and especially at Kiel main train station, where a total of around 350 people were checked. The officers found seven knives, a blunt sword and a blank gun. Small amounts of drugs were also discovered. Fortunately, no violations were found in Gaarden and Preetz. The police draw a positive conclusion and emphasize that the majority of the people checked comply with the applicable regulations. Such measures will continue in the future to further increase security. This is reported by NDR.

Similar checks were carried out at the main train stations in Kiel and Lübeck on February 4, 2025. During this period, in addition to almost 160 people checked, 18 violations of the weapon and knife ban were registered. Seizures include, among other things, 15 knives, a brass knuckle and an irritant spray device as well as narcotics. The administrative offense proceedings and possible fines that were subsequently initiated were intended to raise awareness among citizens. In their statements, Norm Großmann from the Bad Bramstedt Federal Police Directorate and Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack emphasize the necessity of these controls, especially after a knife attack in January 2023. The goal remains to increase safety in local public transport, which is set out in the ordinance banning weapons and knives, which came into force on December 23, 2024. This information can be found in the press portal.

Background to the controls

In view of the increasing security concerns, a nationwide ban on weapons and knives in long-distance public transport has been in effect since October 31, 2024. This ban covers various modes of transport, from long-distance trains to public transport buses to ferries between surrounding islands. The state government of Schleswig-Holstein has issued additional regulations that, among other things, affect access to station buildings and stops. In order to find out about the exact regulations, travelers are advised to contact the transport companies. Further information on the weapon and knife bans is available on the official website of Schleswig-Holstein.

Despite the controls carried out, it remains important to continue to keep an eye on the issue of safety in public spaces. The police will continue to take measures to prevent violence and increase security perceptions in the future. The people of Cologne can only hope that these measures will sustainably improve the security situation in the city.
